Who else agrees that Science spends too much time on...

UFOs and other things irrelevant to our humanity? If you look back at the majority of the science we have learned, when it comes down to it we have been entertained more than helped. Space exploration and trying to find out where we came from may be intriguing, but does it really benefit us? Absolutely not. I understand the importance of teaching us in school about subjects like the planets and especially chemistry, but do we really need to waste time trying to figure out what those lights in the sky were? or whether we used to be monkeys? who really cares? What they need to be focusing on is more ways to reduce pollution and disease and less time preparing for an alien invasion or publishing their new big bang theory.

Why does scientific research have to have a practical result. What about the pure search for knowledge. But, that said, a lot of things that are useful down here on earth have come from the space program.

It needs to have a practical result because a good majority of scientific research is funded by the government and where do you think that money comes from? Tax dollars. I'd rather pay for studies involving healthcare research then something in the space program. And please give me one good example of money spent in the space program that paid off. For years all they've done is scared us and even killed people. No matter what kind of space exploration and research they do, you really think it's gonna make a difference if an out-of-this-world catastrophe happened? I doubt they've got the space lasers manned to explode the nearest meteor headed our way...if something like that is gonna happen it'll be long before our time anyway and it will still never matter. At this rate the world will end by our own doing before something involving space does.

Check out this link for benefits that have come out of the space program: http://techtran.msfc.nasa.gov/at_home.html but I happen to believe that science for science's sake is important also, although it doesn't necessarily have to be government funded.

I agree that we need to spend more time and resources on curing diseases and reducing pollution. I have often wondered why our government spends so much money on space studies. Don't get me wrong... I think it's fascinating and interesting and necessary. But, I think we should cure cancer before tackling the stars!

I do sort of agree with you. The brains of our generation need to deal with the problems at hand or the short future, Alternative ways of fuel, global warming things in general. I mean UFOs and things are interesting, but we need to set our priorities straight.
