This story was probably one of the most endearing, heartwarming stories I had ever heard of. It was about "Scarlett" a calico kitty who had been caught in a fire in Brooklyn, NY back in 1996. She had five kittens who were also trapped in the burning building, but patiently one by one, she rescued them to safety. A fireman happened to see Scarlett and her kittens and rushed them to the North Shore Animal League where they were treated for smoke inhalation....Scarlett had suffered the worst of it, being badly burned almost all over her body. But she healed eventually and was later adopted...here's the original story about her and the kittens Here's an original story about her...there was even a book about her, which I still have http://www.moggies.co.uk/html/scarlett.html Anyway, I was looking up info about this famous kitty and was saddened to find out she had died back in October 24th of this year.. http://www.nydailynews.com/ny_local/2008/10/24/2008-10-24_scarlett_the_cat_that_saved_kittens_from.html Here's an excerpt... Scarlett the cat, a calico hero who drew worldwide acclaim after rescuing her five kittens from a 1996 Brooklyn fire, has passed away. The aging cat - believed to be at least 13 years old - succumbed to multiple illnesses, leaving behind the sad Brooklyn family that adopted her after the blaze. "She was the most precious and loving cat, and in our household, it was all about Scarlett," said her owner, Karen Weller. {Warning: These are not referral links but to the stories about Scarlett the cat} I don't know why but this made me feel so sad to hear of Scarlett's passing as I had remembered the story of her bravery in rescuing her kittens when the news first came out..

I'm saddened to hear of Scarlett's passing as well. She was certainly a remarkable cat and I'm so happy she had a loving family where she didn't have to do any more heroic acts the rest of her life.

I remember that story. Even had my United Way money go to that shelter that year. She was a good mama, very devoted, and apparently just a good cat all around. She lived a much longer life than she might have if not discovered by the fire fighters. Long live her memory!

Thank you so much for sharing this information, Pye! I can't believe it's been that many years ago, I still remember that story as if it just happened. It is sad that Scarlett is no longer with us but she did live a full life. I still remember seeing about the fireman who gave the kittens, or at least one of them, mouth to mouth. Annie

She was one brave cat. She's a good example to any mother out there.Nowadays, there are mothers who are selfish and aandon their young soetimes ut this is a cat and she didn't do it to her young.Cheers for Scarlett and may she rest in peace.

Yes sometimes we hear of horror stories how a newborn baby is found in the trash cause the mother didn't want the baby. And yet here was a "mere" animal willing to risk her life for her babies.

Hi Pyewacket, Just goes to show what a mother will do to save and protect her young. Scarlett was a very brave cat and much loved by her adopted family. It is sad to hear that she has now passed away and I am sure Karen her owner is heartbroken but her memory lives on especially as there has been a book written about her. Huggles. Ellie :D

Hello there. Thank you for sharing this story. I love cats (we currently own four as of today), and this story is so touching for me. I feel bad as well, for she already passed away. She has surely brought happiness to everyone who are touched by her story, and her family as well. She might be in God's lap now, touching her tenderly.

i remember that story and how it made me cry when i heard of her bravery. to think that a cat would risk her own life to save the lives of her babies was, to me,one of the best human interest stories written in a long time. i am very saddened to hear of her passing. my heart goes out to her addoptive family.
