Ice Cream vs. Gelato

I recently spent a month in Italy and got to try a LOT of gelato. For those of you that have had gelato, how do you think it compares to ice cream. Personally, I love both. Gelato seems to have a richer flavor though, so I do not eat as much. I also like that fruity gelato tastes way more like fruit than traditional ice cream flavors here (although vanilla ice cream tops vanilla gelato by far).
