My sister turned 40 on December 2nd. A few weeks before this I decided that I would attempt to throw her a surprise party. My cousin and I put our heads together last week and came up with a grand plan. We told my sister that we were holding our annual family Christmas celebration on December 6th at our cousin's home. My sister was a bit puzzled at first. But, I told her that I ran into our cousin and said we couldn't find a place to hold the gathering and she said we could have it at her place. My sister freaked a little bit because she usually makes dozens of cookies to give to each of our siblings and their children as gifts for Christmas. She said she wouldn't have time to bake them. I told her not to worry about the cookies this year. We weren't even going to have a big dinner like we did in past years. I told her that everyone was bringing something to snack on and we were just going to get together for the fun of it. Well, we managed to pull off the surprise. She walked into the garage at my cousin's house and looked around a the birthday decorations and then turned to look at me and rolled her eyes as everyone said "surprise!" I then asked her if she baked the cookies. She didn't....lucky me!Because I would most certainly get heck from my sister if I posted photos of her on the internet, I edited the photos so her face would not be seen. I surprised her with an afghan that I made for her. She picked out the colors when we were shopping together about 2 months ago. When she started to open the box she stopped for a minute and smiled. She then said she knew what the gift was. I smiled back at her. My cousin had a blast decorating for the party. She had so many banners and table decorations that focused on the fact that my sister turned 40. It was great. She bought my sister a hat, a sash that said 40 & Fantastic. Her gift for my sister was in a black bag that said "Old Bag" on the front of it. That was too funny. The night went well. The party was a surprise for my sister, although she did have her suspect something was up when I told her not to bother making anything for the party.

Hi Elusive, What a thoughtful thing for you and your cousin to do. I love giving surprises (of all kinds) to people. It's just so much fun, and even better when the surprise is kept a secret. I see your brother will be turning fifty. That's a fun age to do a surprise party for. If you decide to 'go for it,' let us know how it turns out. Take care.

I am so happy that the surprise party went off well. Did you find out yet if your sister wants you to add more squares to the afghan?

She said she was happy with it just the way it was. So I am now starting to make other projects. Mittens are next on the list.

Woo Hoo..glad it worked out. I love surprise parties. My son turned 30 in Oct. and his wife wanted to have one.....but he told her if she did there would be big trouble....he doesn't like having the attention focused on him....so we passed. But it's so much fun to surprise everyone! And so glad you had a great time!

My brother will be turning 50 pretty soon. I can't remember if it will be this January or next. I have to check with my mother. This would be a good one to plan. He whined when he turned 40.

That's pretty cool! I'm glad you were able to pull it off. We've been planning my sister-in-laws 40th birthday for a little over a year - and it's NEXT October!!! We're all going to fly down there - I don't know that my brother-in-law has every been to her place. We're really looking forward to it!
