The cookies don't taste like my mom used to make...

Christmas cookies - The cookies that aren't going to the cookie swap this week

I haven't baked cookies for the holidays in MANY years. I think my son was actually astonished to see them. These are my favorite cookies of all time - I could eat them by the dozen and never get tired of them. For some reason though, they just don't taste like they do when my mom makes them. I'll be going over there this week and will try hers alongside mine just to see if it's a mental thing or for real. My son said they taste just like grandmas, they just taste different to me because I had to make them.

Hey reiny! It probably is just your imaginiation! I'll bet they do taste like your Mom's and you just don't think so because you made them. Try hers and see if you think there is a difference. I know when I cook stuff that my Mom made it does taste like my Mom's stuff. It reminds me of hers as soon as I taste it. But, sometimes when you spend so much time cooking or baking something you kind of get full and lose your taste for a minute. You know what I mean? That's kind of like when I cook a big meal like on Thanksgiving. I can barely stand to look at the turkey, nevermind eat any of it after spending all day cooking it. I bet when you compare it to your Mom's it does taste the same.

This week when I go to my mom's I'm taking some of my cookies with me to try right beside hers. I'm very curious to see how they taste :)

I know what you mean! My mom made some of the most awesome cookies ever! She'd cater my dad's office party and boy was that amazing! She was a professional (although never did anything with it) cake decorator - back when they decorated cakes the hard way with frosting and not easy fondant like they do today. But she had the talent! And her cookies at christmas time - I think Martha Stewart learned from her! But as she hands her recipes down to me and I make them, they just dont taste as I remember them. Now granted, those tastes go back 25 years or so, so I might just have that conotation in my memory banks, but still - just isn't the same. Maybe because I made them and not her - maybe it is just something where the two things go together. Mine are good and I have lots of compliments on them, but to me... Mom's will always hold the title!

hahahah - Actually, the difference is what I was thinking it was. My mom uses shortening, but she gave me the recipe with butter...

My son said they taste the same as grandmas, but they don't to me. Of course it hasn't stopped me from trying to find the difference - that stack is dwindling!

Don't stop until you find the difference... even if it means baking another batch...and another... and another... it is important that you solve this mystery!

I have come to the conclusion that it is not the recipe it is the love that is put in to the recipe. I make macaroni and cheese and when my sister makes it just like I do it does not taste as good to her son. I think it is because it has Auntie's love in it. He also loves my meat loaf better than hers even if she uses my recipe. I know that is is the love there. I think the cookies have your mom's love and yours do not.

There is a lot of truth to that! I remember my sons first Christmas in Japan. I sent him some of my mother's cookies and he ate them all - even the ones he didn't like. He told me that every bite was a taste of home.

I am glad your son got his Christmas gift on time. I did read that post but did not respond to it. I am glad he is able to get the cookies you send him.

Is that a actual picture of the cookies you made? If they are they look awesome! Yeah sometimes we can be our own worst critic, maybe your cookies are as good as moms. Years ago I made a recipe for no-bake cookies because I missed the no-bake cookies my mom use to make, but the recipe I had was different then the one my mom used when she was alive. Well needless to say after slaving over those cookies for awhile they came out pretty crappy. They wouldn't even hold a shape and were gooey and falling apart and they didn't get hard after they cooled, nothing like moms. But luckily 3 years ago My sister gave me mom's original no-bake cookie recipe and when I made them they came out perfect, just like moms

I never can make anything that tastes as good as how my mom makes it. I don't know if it's mental or not. We just grow up on good cooking and find mom's shoes hard to fill, I guess. The cookies do look delicious though!

Thanks! They actually are pretty good. I found out tonight though, that my mom uses shortening although she gave me the recipe that says butter.

You know when there is a big difference in cookies and cakes, it is almost always the type of oil or shortening you used. Did you use margarine instead of butter or shortening? Small changes like that can make a big difference in baking. Your mom might use special butter, or unsalted butter or something like that. Ask her!

waysouth - I will have to ask her what kind of butter she uses, although I'm pretty sure we both get the same kind (we shop at the same store... That could be it though!!!

Mom's cooking is ALWAYS better no matter how hard we try. My mom showed me how to make various things. I do exactly as she did and they still don't compare to hers. It's all part of lifes mysteries is all. No one tops moms cooking ever. EVER! HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

Well they say 1/2 the taste is the looks and if that's so they should taste great! I think it is a mental thing but never the less nothing tastes like mom made it!

When I go to my mom's this week to get more cookies to send to my youngest son in the Navy, I'm going to take mine with me and do a comparison. Hers will probably still taste better!!
