How do PTC sites earn ?

Well,I have not yet visited a ptc site.Hearing from people around,I understand it is paid to click on advertisements and its links.My question is why ptc sites pay you for simply clicking on ads and you are not buying anything there?Is it just the traffic they get and can gain more ads?Even if it is so,why pay for just clicks?

It`s like this (example) They get 1000 $ per month, 30% - 40% - 50 % (depends) go to the users, some of what they get goes on the site maintenance and the rest in they`re pockets. simple
