or do they have to share yours? My son was supposed to have his own computer. My sister "gave" him one as a gift 2 Christmases ago, but she had to put a new video card in it and some other stuff. Well, he still does not have it, so he is still sharing mine with me. Do your kids have their own computer? How old were they when they got it?

My oldest child is seven and I don't think that he is old enough to take care of his own computer yet. I think maybe when he turns ten I will by a computer for all the children to share. My children still aren't very good with responsibility and it takes a lot of responsibility to care for a computer. Escpecially since they are so expensive. I will occasionally let them use my computer to play games but thats about it.

My son is almost 9. He has been using computers since he was 3, so he has learned to be pretty good with them.

My family has a total of three computers. The children are allowed to use two of the three computers. We don't allow them to have computers in their rooms however. My children got their first computer when my daughter was four, she is now ten. Mainly my children use their computers to go to learning sites and to e-mail family and friends.

Dear Lilybug, If you can afford it then it would be a good idea for him to have his own. Is he about 10 years old? However, I think that I would limit the time he is allowed to use it. and of course you must check to see that he is using it responsibly. I'm sure that there is something so that you can check what sites he is on. I bought my first computer for home when my daughter was about 10 years old. when she started college a friend of ours gave her his laptop as he had updated the model. I'm sorry that your sister did not live up to her promise though. We should never break a promise to a child. I would do the same as you are doing. Allowing him to share mine. Good posting Lilybug

Hi lilybug, When I was 10 I had a computer. I guess though that is become I grew up with computers all of my life, with my dad being a computer analyst and all. In my lifetime of 20 years I have owned 3 various computers, and now I have a laptop. My dad gave me my first computer at 10 , and then I bought the rest of them. My dad gave me a laptop too. I think there has to be a set level of understanding of responsibility before a parent gives their children a laptop. Also, buying one of those little store bought "learn to use a laptop" laptop's are somewhat good to start them off with, even though to be honest there is such a huge difference between the two. luvandpower

I was around 14 when I got my first computer, but that was 16 years ago before a lot of people had computers. It was a super slow computer and I had dial up internet, but it was cool to me.

My older daughter has her own but my oldest son (her oldest brother) is on it most of the time. So right now my older daughter and the two younger children share my laptop along with my husband. i have my own computer though, but sometimes my husband gets on it when I am not on it so one of the other children can get on the laptop.

We share right now, but it would be nice if he had his own so that we could both use the computer at the same time rather than having to wait till the other one is done.

My son got his when he was 7. He's 9 now. We upgraded and gave him the old computer. It still works just fine. We monitor what he does and he's only allowed to be on it for a set time. He's been using the school computers since kindergarten and some of their assignments are from the internet so he has to use one at home anyway and I'd rather him not be on my computer.

My parents never let my sister and I have our own computers. They wanted to be able to see what we were doing online at all times. I don't blame them. A lot of kids are trustworthy, but sometimes they get into stuff they don't even know is harmful. But I think as long as a parent is vigilant and they can afford it, it is great for a child to have a computer of their own.

There are four computers in the house. The main one is in the living room which is mine. The boys and I use it and if my daughter needs to print something she will use it. Jessica has a laptop. She got it last year but has had a pc in her room since she was 9. The boys have a pc in their room. It is a bit slower and they don't use it at all. They have had it for a couple years now, so that would have been when they were 7 and 5 years old. I am likely to be the one on it if they are on mine and I want to be online. There is also one in my room. It is pretty slow and can't do anything with flash. It is older. I can check hotmail or mylot, but if I wanted a game or something, it would not work. I hope that I can find someone who has none or something that can use it and I would give it away. Most of the time though people just use the one in the living room. I want to get a new one, with a good video card cause now a days many games won't play on my pc.

My daughter does have her own computer. My hubby bought me a new one last Christmas. So my daughter got the old one. It is good practice for her. My daughter is 5. And she has computer on Wednesdays at school. Yes Kindergarten and computers now go hand in hand.

I dont have kids but i have a younger sister. She doesnt have her own computer yet (she will on christmas day). She wont be allowed to have it in her room or if she is...no internet. She's 11 and my mom says that to use the internet she must be where mom can see what she is viewing and doing. My mom let me have a pc in my room when i was about 16 but it didnt have an internet connection unless you connected to dialup I didnt use the internet because we had limited time online.
