The Proposal that Brought Tears to my Eyes

I haven't witnessed a marriage proposal ever and last night I did and for a few minutes, I had to keep wiping away the tears streaming down my cheeks as I was obviously touched by it all, considering I didn't know the couple at all. Last night at work, I took one of the guys out to this dance that he goes to every month. I have never been to one and the other staff suggested I go since both of them really loved the whole experience when they attended. And I am so thankful they did. My guy was so excited and happy and as we walked into the hall, I see people dancing and I ended up dancing and singing along as well. During the break for snacks, they had the month celebrants go up and after that, the deejay asked for the couple to go up the stage. There they were and the guy signaled for everyone to be quiet as he had something to say. "I love you very much and would you marry me?" And the woman said "YES!" and they hugged for as long as they could before the well-wishers separated them. So there I was sitting next to my guy and I was keeping myself from bawling out. I know some of you know what line of work I do and to me, that experience is something truly magical and inspiring. LOVE.

I've seen one proposal (the worst), heard one (the best) and done one myself. The worst was a guy who proposed at the table next to a friend and me... in Pizza Hut. Yes, bad enough that he asked that most important question in the middle of a fast food joint where the tables are so close together that you can barely breathe, but to make matters worse he didn't even say anything. He wrote it on a napkin. Sigh. The best was one of my brothers. He and his girlfriend were on holiday. They took a steam train trip one day and were chatting away. The train goes into a tunnel and, when they came out into the light again, he was down on one knee. The entire carriage of people applauded when she said 'yes'. I proposed to my girlfriend after a special evening out to celebrate the anniversary of the day we met. She was absolutely not expecting it and was so surprised she couldn't even speak! And yes, I got down on one knee and did things properly.

Thank you, Spike, for sharing these momentous events. I also once got on a steam train and Boyfriend and I went through a dark tunnel as well but no proposal for me just yet. That was the first year we were together. So did you and your girlfriend already marry or still working on the wedding?

the sad thing there are more and more of those kind of proposals happening like that at like pizza hut and various fast food joints such as that. i knew this one guy who proposed at a burger king...he at least wrote it out by shaping the fries into the words " marry me?" ...even though i am assuming he did have to eat some of the fries to get this done.

Still working on it. I'd already known her for almost 15 years when I proposed (no, we hadn't been going out that long!) so we're in no rush. ;)

Okay, have me teary eyed before I've even got my day going!! I am such a romantic (don't let anyone know!)and softie. I agree the worst proposal would be in a Pizza Hut...wow, what a proposal to tell you kids when they ask how daddy proposed! Yeah your dad wrote it on a Pizza Hut napkin with pizza slobber on it and shoved it across the table at me while I had a hunk of pepperoni in my teeth! We sealed it with a toast with Bud Light. My engagement ring was a pull tab he managed to fashion into a ring. Sorry, that's that off the wall side I have, but I can imagine the whole proposal thing. Unless the man is mute, writing it on a napkin... in a fast food place. That is shades of my ex-husband, and you can figure out "why" he's an ex!

But what if the guy really wants to marry the girl and that's all he can afford to do, loverbear? I'm not one to judge but I certainly don't want that happen to me either! Thanks for sharing, loverbear!

LOL. Your reasons validate your earlier response, Loverbear and like you, I have also thought about other options as well, even cheaper ones... like the one by the fountain, you don't even have to buy food or anything... it will still be romantic right? I think the guy was pressured into "treating" his woman into "dinner" because there's that cliché of proposals happening at a very elegant and romantic dinner. I hope your sister has moved on and away from her ex-husband. She is way better off without her. Right now, I can't think what a Swap Meet is. I'll look it up later on or you'll probably tell me what it is. Enjoy the time with your pets, loverbear and don't worry, your secret's safe with me.

Oh, my! Everyone has a different way of doing that sort of thing, and although personally, I wouldn't want that sort of thing to be a public event, for those that do, surely it is a poignant time. Did boyfriend laugh at you for getting swept away?

I don't think I told him yet what happened last night. But Sister did laugh at me. The couple both had some kind of autism and that whole evening, they were just slow dancing with each other.

Oh, I'm curious to find out about this similar situation jessi. I think what made the proposal more special and heartwarming is that you really could tell that they were both in love with each other. Thanks for sharing.
