What was the first computer you owned?

Mine was about the size of a small lap top and had a membrane keyboard. You used the TV as your monitor and a single page letter would use up all the memory. It was made by the Timex watch company.

I can't really remember which was the first I used, but the first I owned was a Pentium 120 with 8 MBs of RAM and a 1 MB VGA Card. It was awesome, I was able to run Quake 1 at 320 x 200 at a very decent speed. Well, at least if I ran it on DOS, under Windows 95 it needed the insane amount of 16 MBs of RAM. Boy I miss those days. I was thinking the other day about the early computers. There was no internet then but if you could connect one to your phone line you could still communicate with other computers. Just dial there number from your computer and their computer would pick it up. The screen was split. You typed on the top and the other computer replied on the bottom. Worked pretty good to just chat with friends.

Yeah, we didn't have the world wide web, but we did have BBSs. It wasn't visually appealing, but you were able to download stuff, share. And the best part, trolls didn't exist back then. This is depressing, I'm starting to sound like my grandpa. Rich

Our first computer was an apple 2e. Slap in those floppy disk and we were happy for hours. I also remember doing alot of equations on it. I seem to recall that is all that our computer consisted of back then.

The TI 99 by Texas Instrument was the first one I saw that you could plug any games or anything like that into. It had programed cards you could plug into it.

Wow - that must have been a long time ago Art! A single page letter using up all the memory? We have come a long way since then. I got my first computer about 12 years ago and it didn't have much memory, but that didn't matter too much initially, because I didn't know how to do much on it anyway, lol! It's good to look back and see just how far we have come in technology.

The best I can remember this was in the mid 60's. There was no printers or any other way to get anything out of a computer. I used it mostly to learn how to program a computer. There were a few short programs you could type into it and make it do some simple things. Other than that it was about useless. Just being able to type your name on the TV screen was something to behold then.

Then you missed a lot of the fun of the older computers. Some times it wasn't all that much fun though.

I bought my first computer in 1999. I called Gateway and ordered it. It was a good computer, but I really didn't know anything about them at the time, so I probably paid for a little more computer than I really needed. I got married in 2001, and I left the computer there for my dad to use. He has had it upgraded a little since that time, but he is still using it today, and it is still working well and doing what he needs it to do. It has been a useful tool to both him and I for almost ten years, so I think it was a good investment. We have gotten my money's worth out of it...

We also had one of those membrane keyboards which attached to the telly ... and there was a cassette player you could attach to save stuff. My Dad had a Commodore 64, which was better than the thing we had (can't remember the name of it) - but we saved up to buy one of the early Apple computers, which was the bees knees back then. It's laughable to think of the power they had (not)!

The first computer I owned was a TRS 80 model I with an expansion module. I think I said that right. Can you imagine how long ago that was? Anyway I thought I was really something with my own computer and I was going to change the world. It didn't take me long to realize that there were others who would always know more about computers than I would ever learn.

A long time ago, my dad bought our family a Packard Bell PC with Windows 3.1 on it. We still have it at home (along with at least 6 other computers and laptops) and it still works!

The first computer that I personally owned was a refurbished Compaq. Paid about $150 for it. It was great! Prior to that, my parents had a Gateway computer.
