On our last day of vacation on North Carolina's Crystal Coast this past summer, we were hungry and looking for a place to dine. We'd been to a few restaurants but none struck us as anything special or impressive. We entered Scotch Harbor, a small restaurant in a shopping center lot. It was a long shot, but we were starving!
We were seated immediately and served water and bread. I inquired about the vegetarian dish and the hostess informed me I could pick whatever combinations I chose. I decided to try a butternut tortellacci with the tomato-jalepeno cream sauce after I asked a few questions about its preparation. My boyfriend ordered butternut tortellacci as well but he chose the portebella-vegetable cream sauce with some homemade mashed potatoes on the side. Although we normally love drinking cocktails, we decided to do without today as it was still a bit early in the day and we had a long night ahead of us. I regret not trying at least one because I imagine they would have been delicious!
I was pleased when our food arrived. Each dish looked magnificent. I tasted my butternut tortellacci smothered in some jalepeno cream sauce and scooped a few fresh tomatoes and mushrooms onto my fork. It was marvelous. I have not had a dish that satisfying in what has seemed like ages! I tried my boyfriend's dish and he sampled mine; everything was very rich and delectable.
It was just the right portion and a little pricey for being in a shopping center parking lot, but the taste, service, atmosphere, and just the overall general quality of the experience was well worth it to us all. Our server was very attentive and accomodating.
Scotch Harbor is a gem and a surprise find in a busy strip mall location on Atlantic Beach. There is something for everyone here. This restaurant looked small and typical from the outside, but on the inside it was open, airey, and inviting. We tried this establishment on a whim when we were drawn there by our hunger, and it turned out to be the best restaurant we visited on the entire island!
