What do you think is the role of God Parents in the life of a child?

In my own understanding, God parents are suppose to be acting as a second parents for the child. They will help in giving advices. Teaching the child the proper and the right ways. They will provide support in any way they can. They will serve as a guide for the child to have good morale and spiritually active. But the case nowadays, as I see it, God parents are just God parents during the baptism of the child. After that, they don't give a damn anymore. I believe God parents have the obligation to their God children. Just as God take care for His children. I hope this will be corrected because God children don't only need gifts during special occasion. They too need some care, love, attention and guidance. Thanks smilyn for the wonderful topic!
