With cheers and chants that echoed President-elect Barack Obama's campaign of change, jubilant workers agreed to a $1.75 million settlement that ends their six-day occupation of a shuttered Chicago factory that became a symbol of the plight of labor nationwide. Republic Windows & Doors, union leaders and Bank of America reached the deal Wednesday evening. Each former Republic employee will get eight weeks' salary, all accrued vacation pay and two months' paid health care, said U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez, who helped broker the deal. He said it works out to about $7,000 apiece. "We lost the jobs but we got something," said Lalo Munoz, who worked at the plant for 24 years. It's not a good severence package for workers like Munz, who had been there for many years, but at least the former employees of this company will get more than they were originally slated to get. By "originally slated to get" did you mean simply layed off even though their contract stipulated the amount of warning and severence? I'm glad they stuck it out since all they were really asking for was what was coming to them. I also applaud them for not making unreasonable demands that usually get added to these kinds of things.

Good for them, score one for the good guys for once! True, it's not a lot for someone who has devoted that many years of his life to the plant but it's certainly better than what they were going to get. If they hadn't stood up for themselves they'd have gotten nothing so sometimes you CAN fight "City Hall" as the old saying goes. Too bad all of those involved in the banking crisis didn't have to be satisfied with $7000 but I guess that's really wishful thinking, right? Annie
