I guess that's how the cookie crumbles!

My Shortbread cookie dough I mean!!! After I had refrigerated my dough over night I went to roll it out and it crumbled all to pieces this morning! I have made it other years and it has turned out really good but this is not my year for shortbread I guess! I will be purchasing some instead this year.... At least my gingerbread, fudge, home made chocolates and cherry surprises turned out nice for me! Has anything like this ever happened to you? I hated to throw it out but it was useless...What a waste of 2/3 cups of butter and 2 cups of flour the price of those two things alone right now is ridiculous and now it's wasted whatever I did wrong! How are you all doing with your baking this year? Are you done yet? I'm usually done by the end of November but am really late this year seeing as it is December 11th! Hoping all your cookies don't crumble into dust!!! Happy Baking! ~Heavens~

Hello, and Good Heavens heavens, I'm so sorry I missed this discussion. Thanks for the 'heads up.' I've just checked my in box thoroughly, and I do not have the notification. I never did! I also checked to see if you were turned on for me to receive these notices, and you are. I really don't get this at all, and I do feel bad that your discussion is so lonely. There are some things I just don't get 'here,' of late. I'm sorry too, to hear about your ruined shortbread. I 'know' yours is yummy. The thing that springs to my mind, is my recent fiasco with those marble squares. This was a Kraft recipe, and I still don't get what happened. It was quite a waste, having to cut the burnt bottoms off, and then 'we' didn't care for it. They won't be made here again. Take care. Big Hugs to you.

Wow caramel, that's really strange. Thanks for letting 'us' know. Why would we not receive 'her' notification? I'm wondering if this means that all of her other friends, didn't get it either? That would account for the two of us being the only respondents. Otherwise it makes no sense. It's a perfectly fine topic, and I'd think one that quite a few could respond to. I was looking forward to reading all of the responses. I don't get it!

Hello Mom and Carmela! O.K I just typed a response here and then it was lost when I went to preview it it disappeared and in fact took me to my main My Lot page without posting my comment!! *SIGH* I do hope this posts this time! Well, thanks so much you two for this enlightening information!!! I have not posted a discussion since posting this one because I felt that it was not worth it if no one was going to come in to them after I took the time to start them! Now I see that it is very possible that My Lot did not notify anyone as to my discussion being started!!! I wonder why this is!?!? Anyhow, thank you both for coming in as I now have four wonderful responses (With some great tips for next time also!) I am so glad that I alerted both of you to this discussion as I really do have some great responses here now! Thanks for being such great friends Mom and Carmela! Love and Hugs to you both! ~Heavens~

Thanks for clearing that up, someonesmom, I was going to say the same thing about the notification..It is turned on for heavens, but I didn't receive this one. At first I thought it was because my computer was not working for about 4 days, so when my mail piles up, I delete it all, but this was written after my computer was running again, I should have had this in my inbox..

Okay, I hope I am not too late here. For one, I have not have this happen to my own recipe before. I wrap my dough in either aluminum or wax paper, making sure it is completely covered. But when I went to help my friend a couple weeks ago, she didn't cover it well and I think it dried out. After much fumbling trying to get it to roll out, we ended up having to add softened butter to the dough to make it smooth..I guess any kind of oil would also work too. Just add a little at a time, until you get the smoothness you need..

Thanks so much for stopping by my dear friend I had mine completely covered with Saran wrap as suggested in the recipe...I never thought of using aluminum foil...something to keep in mind when I try again next year though and thanks so much for the tip! There was no way I could have added anything to mine, it was out on parchment paper to be rolled and hard as a rock...crumbling into huge hard chunks and useless I suppose I could have tried to salvage it into a bowl and tried some of these things but I had actually threw it all out before I even posted this anyway...Well, it is a heads up for next time and I truly do appreciate you stopping by here to enlighten my topic and make it a discussion....It was mighty lonely here without you!!!! ~Heavens~

I always had trouble with shortbread crumbling after putting it in the freezer, wrapping it up, and slicing it. So what I did was not to refrigerate the dough. I just flour some wax paper and roll it between it. And I usually press the dough a bit hard because well it is just flour, sugar, and butter and does not contain any baking soda and I use unbleached flour rather than just all purpose flour. I find it works well.

Hello suspenseful! I did not put my dough in the freezer, it went in the fridge as per instructions in the recipe. I wasn't trying to slice it either I wanted to roll it out and use cookie cutters! Thanks though for the idea of rolling it between wax paper...that may be something worth trying next time!! ~Heavens~
