Are Body Piercing's Socially Acceptable?

Being one of the millions of people who have body piercings, I am wondering what the general feeling is among myLotters.
How do you feel about visible piercings for employees? It seems that they are more and more accepted, yet I find that there are still employers who regulate what can be shown and what can't. I understand huge rings being shown, but why do I have to take my nose piercing out, in which I only wear a small diamond, in order to abide by the rules? Or rather "fit in". It's not offensive and is not different from an earring, in my opinion.
I have several piercings and am not distracted by these or tattoos, which I also have and have to keep covered at work. It's merely an expression of ones self and also a form of art.
Do you have piercings and if so what?

I think it depends what is pierced and what job you have. I work in an office and we really aren't supposed to have more than our ears pierced. Even the ear stretching I've been doing isn't technically allowed (but my lobes are small, only 10G so far). A couple girls have covered up tattoos and I always wondered why they wore skin colored tape over them, but then I realized tattoos are against the rules. I think things can't be allowed in a work place just because they are art, but personally I'm not against body modification. A lot of people are though.
I don't care though if I go into a juice place and someone has a bunch of piercings. However, if I was hiring someone in a professional environment especially if they were dealing with the public, I'd be unlikely to hire the very pierced candidate, ceteris paribus. But a nose stud wouldn't make a difference to me.

I definitely think that, in general, these companies in mention are conforming to what the believe society sees as the "norm". Which really is not causing shock to the older generation. I believe that in approximately 20 years or so it will be socially acceptable and we will see it in more and more places and people will not be judged by the art they choose to display, which really isn't much different than expressing ourselves in the way we dress.
Thank you for your very intelligent take on this subject!

I've only had my ears pierced, I've always been to chicken to have one any were else. I really don't see were they should be offensive to have body piercing's, I do however think that some people go overboard with them, just like they do with their tattoos.

I appreciate your willingness to be honest and speak up. With the few article submission sites that I belong to, it is hard to find people to say what they feel!
I'm not a fan of gauging or some other types of piercings, for me personally, but certainly do not judge people for having them. Even with tattoos, I could care less. I love the PERSON, not their tattoos or piercings!!
Thanks for responding!

I don't mind a small piercing in the nose. However piercing and tattoos does not go hand in hand with certain jobs like policemen, army etc. I don't have any percing. I am tempted to do a small tattoo but I don't like to have a piercing on me.

I honestly don't mind about people who has a lot of tattoos or piercings on their body who is working in an office or any kind of job. For me, they're still human and most of them are smart people. They just choose to express themselves with body arts.
I have 3 piercings each in my ear and piercing in my bellybutton. Tattoo on my left chest as well.

Sue-
I just read a very disheartening post and came here to post something about discrimination and saw your thread, so thought I'd answers your first before I started one on just the topic of discrimination.
Several were on about how they just thought it was disghusting that this one woman had over 6500 piercings. I admit, it's a lot of hardware, but I don't think I'd go around calling her names either just because she made a choice to pierce her body.
I don't think anyone should have to remove piercings simply because another says "Ohhh gross, that's offensive". I could very well say "Well your nose is offensive so cut it off". You know?
I guess I just have grown tired that no matter where you are there is a new form of discrimination, and it comes in the area of body modifications.
I think that it is slowly coming about, but it's slow. We've now got middle aged men getting hoops but they are small. My husband has a 6 in his septum, and still gets asked "They hired you with that?" lol. And yes, they did.
I guess it's just sad all the way around. I try to be very nice to other people, but to see someone be treated like trash because they simply decided to adorn themselves, well it's just bigotry in my book.

Ears and side of my nose. All are socially acceptable in 99% of professions for people my age here.
