Is regular drinking of cough syrup harmful to throat?

I used to have sore throat evry now and then so now i am fed up of going to the doctor to check myself. I became my own docter i will just go straight to the pharmacy and pick up anything after talking with the pharmacist.But now i am a bit worried because people said that i might get some kind of other disease because of regular drinking of cough syrup.
