Has anyone been to Oman? We're living in India, and Oman is just a hop, skip, and a jump away, so we were thinking about checking it out. Is it safe for Americans?

dear indojo,i stayed in Oman for about 8months as my hubby is employed there and returned back to india june 2008.Oman is such a lovely place where the roads are 5times broader than India.you can stay there for about 10-15 days after that you would get bugged up,it is a place well suited for elders as it is very peaceful.Lulu hypermarket is a supermarket where you get things from a matchbox to a diamond jewellery it has 3-4 branches in major cities.Muscat is the capital of Oman is a beautiful place where you could find indian restaurants like saravanabhavan, kamat, woodlands.Ruwi a place where the indianembassy is located one can get gift articles at a lower price.sultan Qaboos palace is a must to visit.turtle beach located in sur is best visited during the months of september and october.major cities are sur, sallalah, sohar, ibri, ibra, nizwa etc.Oman coffeshops serve shourma a snack which is popular in Oman.Omani women look pretty and wear a long black purdah sometimes covering their faces and the men wear a long white nigty a turban like cloth in their head.Oman beaches are very clean and people can go for fishing at a short distance.Oman is also famous for its dates and petrol, the cost of petrol is 8 litres for 1rial(rs100)so you can very well enjoy car journey.people own cars and you cannot find much 2wheelers there.Dubai is about 4-5 hours away from Oman so better dont mis visiting Dubai.electronic goods are very low in price.so have a great journey and please do mail me after returning from Oman.

Hi, What did you mean after 15 days you would get bugged up? Do women have to cover their hair?

I think that Oman would be an exciting and worthwhile destination. I haven't been there yet but would do so if I was living in India. I think you could look at the Internet to check how safe it is there at the moment. I am British and I have met many Americans whilst traveling. One of my old colleagues went to Oman in the early 90s and he really liked it there.

I really want to see the middle east while we are in this part of the world. I'm just wondering about how safe it is, especially for women. I want to see Morocco, Egypt, Israel, Oman, etc. I plan to stay away from countries like Saudi Arabia but I would really like to see Iran...I just don't know how I can justify the risk to my 3 year old daughter.
