There is a lake in my town with a large walking/bike trail going along side it. The trail is about 2 miles long. It's nice in the summer to walk along the trail next to the lake.
But during the holiday season they turn this trail into Lights On The Lake. They put up tons and tons of light displays, many of them are animated. There are things like rudolf jumping over the trail, so while you drive under it he's jumping right over your car. There's gingerbread men, plenty of elves. Even a light display of Santa. There's also a huge display of a castle, the display is the size of a house. In each window of the castle is a different character, like some reindeer, or elves, and Santa and Mrs. Claus kissing under the mistletoe.
Not to mention the houses that are on the opposite side of the trail than the lake are also all decorated, and let me tell you, these houses are worth millions since they're on the lake, and they put up a pretty impressive light display themselves! We've gone every year so long as I can remember, and it's always been enjoyable.
The cost is about $8 per car for over 2 miles of light displays. Your entry fee also gets you admission to the nearby Native Museum which puts on a small display of Christmas from around the world, and Christmas through out history. Then there is also some forts that have stood there since the 1800's or so when there was a battle... well I don't remember the details of it, I believe the French were involved as well as the Iriquois.
It's best to see this light display when there is snow on the ground, and we've recently had a foot or so of snow fall, so hubby suggested we go do this tonight. I'm looking forward to it.
Does your town do anything like this? Do you have a special place you visit each holiday?

There is a place I remember going too with my parents, hubby and our then three kids I was pregnant at the time with my daughter. I think it was around october/november time and we went to see this light display that they had in this localish town, a bit like what you are describing. It was a nightmare. It was packed to the point where we were stuck in the park on this trail following the lights around I was pregnant as I say but had polyhydramnios so was carry double the size and because I was on my feet for so long I was getting pains in my stomach to the point I was nearly passing out! It was a night I never forget!

With ours, we stay in the car and drive through it. I doubt we'd go if we had to walk, it's far too cold for the little ones.

We go to a few different places. We have been talking about going to an amusement park that is having them this year. They have a lake there too and it too is called Lights on the lake. We've never gone to them before, but it is only $8 a car load also. Last year we went to this drive threw one that wasn't as impressive as we thought it would be. I forget how much we paid. We go to another one that is on a fair grounds. They have a lot of motion ones. You can drive through or you can park and go walk around the grounds. It is really cool though. They have a big bonfire. There are little shops. There is a shop that sells fudge and goodies like that. They have a building with a bunch of model trains set up. They have horses giving hayrides around the grounds. I can't wait to go to one of them this year.
