There are loads, and loads of genres or moslty Sub-Genres. and as a Rock/Metal fan Rock certanly does have the larger range and influence in music.
Some genre's sub genres are

Hard Rock
Glam Rock
Punk Rock
Blues Rock
Pop Rock
Folk Rock
Grunge Rock
Theatrical Rock
Rap Rock
Prog Rock
Pshycadellic Rock
Heavy Metal
Power Metal
Death Metal

Speed Metal
Thrash Metal
Sleaze Metal
Black Metal
Nu Metal
Punk

Blues
Jazz
Rock N'Roll
Hip-Hop
Rap
Country
Pop
Dance/Club
And so on...Personally itd be Hard Rock/Heavy Metal, although there are some real good Power Metal bands such as W.A.S.P., some good Thrash Metal Bands such as Motorhead, Hard Rock Bands such as AC/DC, Whitesnake...and so on

my favourites have to be emo/screamo, alternative and acoustic. my favourite band of all time is dashboard confessional - i think that to convey that kinjd of emotion, you have to strip the music down, and that is what they do so well. i love them =]

Progressive rock. Bands like Emerson, lake & Palmer, yes, Alan Parson's Project and of course, Pink Floyd. My second favorite, believe it or not is heavy metal/hard rock. Bands like Poison, Black Sabbath, Ted Nugent. But I love the creativity and long songs of progressive rock.

Ah you have some good/famous, popular choices. Pink Floyd and Sabbath are awesome.
