How do you Make Friends at a new School?

Whenever I go to a new school or event, I smile a bit and hope to turn a few curious stares into a genuine connectin. But it's HARD! How do you make friends quickly? What kind of conversation do you make and what do you think is most important to keep their friendship? I'd really love to know!
