Where is my Honey?

My throat has been giving me grief the last two days. Last night at work, I had some tea with honey and that made me feel better. Today, instead of coffee, I opted to have hot tea with honey for my first drink of the day. Unfortunately, we don't have honey in the house. Pooh would not want to visit us ever. I looked at every cupboard. I know why I don't have it in stock. Because I've never liked honey until a few weeks ago. But Sister doesn't have it, Boyfriend doesn't have it either. Does everyone here have honey in their supply? I assumed that it's a staple or a basic ingredient at least for everyone. Is there a basic ingredient that your house does not carry?

Honey is a staple. When you are feeling tired or have a sore throat you mix a tablespoon of honey and a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar (another staple) together in about 8 ounces of water and drink it. Once upon waking and once before bed always did the trick for me. One thing, though, you have to be careful and read the labels on both the honey and the apple cider vinegar before buying because they have apple cider "flavored" vinegar and syrup with honey "flavor" -- even the "honey" KFC gives out with the biscuits isn't real honey. Did you know that? The staple we never keep on hand is ketchup. We eat it at a restaurant sometimes but never have it in our home. Mustard, yes, but no ketchup.

See, right here is one staple I forgot to mention... apple cider vinegar! I always have it in the house and sometimes drink it straight out of the bottle. Of course it is not the fake stuff that drAnn is talking about, it is real apple cider vinegar with the mother in it.

We don't have apple cider vinegar in the house. We have fish and chip vinegar, sushi vinegar and white vinegar and I am pretty sure white vinegar isn't good to chug or something like that. It's good for cleaning, I know that. So when Sister offered a packet of KFC honey just now, I asserted that it's not real honey. From you, of course. We always have ketchup in the house. There is always one or two unopened to replace the almost-finished one. Boyfriend will probably starve if ketchup isn't around. Mustard I don't care for.

It's a common grocery item for the Indians I guess. I have been brought up seeing a bottle on virgin honey since childhood days. It's my grandmom's common cold remedy. She used to prepare honey tea with some spices. It works wonders. Having said this, I hardly take it nowadays. I do not like the taste of honey much and guess what it has different use now. I use it on face pack! It's an excellent dehydrating agent.

Honey pack I put but very often. The fact that i am not into too much of this, keeps me away from it or anything similar. I hardly go to parlors even.

I don't like to put anything on my face except a cleanser. Although once, I had a mudpack, it was icky but my face felt really smooth afterwards although my hair smelled like I cleaned the sewer. I thought I was the only one in the world who doesn't like honey and now I've found two like I was before. Thanks, Mou. Enjoy the honey face pack.

I don't think I have been to one in a year. By next year, I think I'll treat myself to a lovely haircut and some relaxing massage. Join me, Mimpi!

There is always honey lying around at my place and that is for the simple reason that afriend who has a coffee estate also does the hone bee farming and he provides us with an ample supply of honey whever he is in town.

Isn't your friend generous... I went to the store today to get some honey but the small bottle they had was 3.49$. For some reason, I thought they would only be a dollar or a little bit more. But no. Thanks for sharing, alokn.

Hi Anne, Honey is a staple at my home. Every morning we parents and kiddo, each have a spoonful on empty stomach throughout the year. I have heard of its medicinal values and I have no doubts on them, but another reason why I have it coz it is supposed to reduce or at least control extra flab. Ummmmmm not really, there’s nothing staple that the kitchen is in want of, I would like to pride myself on having a well stocked larder.

I really want to like honey. I really want to ingest the nectar of flowers into my body! Of course it has been puked up by bees, but it's not like human vomit or anything... it is flower nectar brought back to the hive in a very sensible fashion. I never have it in my house though. I do not actually like the way it tastes. I would rather get it straight out of the hive though rather than all this stuff that's been cooked and sh!t. Other than that I consider rice, beans, some frozen veggies, and a few kinds of fish staples, and I always have those. Oh, also mayo and butter. And cream. And tea. There are probably a few things I am forgetting but if I have those things I feel very secure, hehehe. But I imagine that my house does not carry a few things that would be staples in other households.

Mostly I just like pinto beans with lots and lots of cumin in them. That is because when I was living in L.A. I had my favorite little burrito stand that was run by this woman who made the BEST beans... ever since them I have added them to my 'staples'. I used to hate hate hate anchovies... if I ate a teeny little piece of one I would gag and wretch. But then one day I found out that they were high in the omega fatty acids and so I decided that I wanted to like them. I started out putting one anchovy in my salad, all chopped up really fine. It took a little while, but now I will put an entire tin of them into my salad, and I often will even find myself craving them!

Yeah, I'm not a big fan of raisins or cranberries either. I do like cranberry sauce with turkey and sometimes like raisins in hot cereal or oatmeal cookies but I rarely have them in the house. If I do get some they sit in my cupboard for like a year, hehehe. In fact I had some honey in there once and it was in there for a whole year too. It turned all crystallized and hard and I finally just threw it away. Wish I could have chocolate last even a fraction of that time. I'll get one of those huge bars, or a bag of kisses thinking I'm just going to nibble on it for a couple of weeks. I don't know why I keep trying to fool myself with that because it is always gone by like the next day or the third at the latest.

I don't think I'm ready for anchovies just yet. The other night, I had a craisin. When I told Sister that, she was so amazed. I don't like cranberries and raisins both. Raisins would have to be my most loathed thing I could put in my mouth ever.

Thanks again, susan. I definitely would try milk and honey together. I don't think I can just eat honey alone but drowning it with something else, that I can do.

That Winnie the Pooh can be a right tosser at times SaintAnne. Honey is excellent for a sore throat and putting a couple of slices of lemon in the tea is great also. We have honey in the house at the moment but it is only a small jar and it is probably the only time we have bought it in the last three years! I love honey myself, but it is just not something we seem to eat that much of anymore. Is butter or margarine a basic ingredient? If so, then we rarely have this in the house either.

AHAHAHAHA... I made a mistake there. I seriously was thinking Pooh was Winnie's name when I typed this discussion. I am so hilarious! Yes, butter, I dare say is a staple here, there and everywhere. It goes with potatoes, pancakes, desserts, croissants, rolls and you use it to bake. I really thought we had honey from five years ago.

Unfortunately in the apartment we don't have honey at hand. Here at home though we do. It is good to have on hand though and I'm often frustrated that we don't have it in the apartment. I got over a cold in less than a week with a mixture of honey and garlic so there is a good reason I want it around. lol

I'm thinking of a concoction of ginger and honey. I don't even know if it tastes good but that is what my tongue and throat are craving right now. I went to the grocery store right now and I didn't realize honey was a bit on the expensive side. Hope you've really gotten over the cold. And stay warm! Thanks, K1tten.

I do not have honey in the house at the moment. The last I bought set for so long that is turned to sugar. Of course you can re-liquidfy it, but I think we just tossed it.

We ALWAYS have honey in the pantry. Most of the time we have New Zealand Manuka honey as it has amazing health giving properties. It is a natural antiseptic and healer. At the first sign of a cold I take honey and cider vinegar mixed and it beats the sh*t outta those nasty germs and bugs. It's also great on toast!

I've never put honey on toast or anything else for that matter, MichaelJay. But thanks for mentioning what kind of honey you use. I wonder if they have that here. Yup, I've heard from reliable sources that honey with REAL apple cider vinegar keeps the cold and sore throat away. Thanks again.

Hi SaintAnne! Sometimes I overlooked the stacking of even a simple paracetamol or analgesic in medicine cabinet. It's just so stupid because I know that most of us belong to the "headache" family (well, it's the least before migraine which really runs in our blood)..how could I be so forgetful at times?!

It's not recommended to take pain/ache relievers all the time. They tend to affect the liver. Sister and I know this but we do have Tylenol, Ibuprofen, Acetaminophen or whathaveyous at hand just in case. I get migraines once in a while now. Thanks, mjmlagat, and I hope those aches come rarely!

Hello SaintAnne. We have a small jar of honey and its almost finish, lol. I like honey in green tea. I think there's a few basic ingredients that we don't have in our apartment and I think husband mentioned some of them.

Perhaps Pooh stole all your honey. I have some supply of honey at home. But the homemade honey seems to give me diarrhoea, so i don't really consume them... But nonetheless, I LOVE HONEY!! But this isn't the reason why i'm a big fan of Pooh. Haha!

Now you're making me really curious as to the real reason behind your love for Winnie the Pooh. I guess desperate times call for desperate measures. Why would one steal honey from a no-honey zone? Thanks, krfanlim.
