I read this book a few years ago. I thought it was a wonderful novel with an interesting plot and an intriguing literary style. I think that the persona was very well developed and allowed the reader to embody the main character and his struggle. Has anyone else read this book? If so what are your thoughts? Do you think it offered interesting insights into psychology?

Yes. I read this book when I was in high school and saw the movie Charly years later. I always loved this book. It was very exciting at first as I thought of the medical possibilities and break through while the meds were taking affect on Charlie as well as Algonon and they were getting smarter. But then it was sad when he was intelligent enough to make the discover that his co-workers were not his friend and didn't like him. That in fact they were cruel and making fun of his disability. But then it was heart wrenching when Algonon started deteriorating and you realize that Charlie had the same fate. Even worse, he was intelligent enough to realize it himself. I haven't thought about the story in years. But now looking back on it, I understand that it wasn't just about the characters in the story but it was a commentary on the treatment of people with disabilities as well. Very profound story. I think it's still relevent today.
