What does this new tagging feature do?

I'm not familar with tagging. what is it?

Basically it lets you set a few keywords that summarize the discussion, and that makes it easier to search for discussions on a particular topic...

when I saw tag this discussion, I was unsure if it was a good thing or not, so if it just labels the conversation then it's completely safe to do right?
