With the recent, nasty weather I've been home and decided to make another craft project. Completed this project last night and thought it turned out really cute. I plan to send this to another grandchild to use as a bank. What's your opinion on this completed project which is made with plastic canvas?

As usual another great craft job you have done. Big Bird is so cute. I know your grandchildren love getting things from you that are made by hand and love in every stitch.

Its cute, did you manage to get the coffee smell out of the can? That's been a problem I've heard about in some of my craft groups. I don't drink much coffee, and I like the smell, but I can see if you are putting food gifts in them, you don't want them smelling of coffee.

Oops, thanks so much for the reminder. I have no sense of smell as a result of an accident a few years ago. I do run the coffee cans through the dishwasher. I'll have to ask my daughter but she didn't mention any smell. Maybe because it's a plastic can? Main purpose of these cans is to be used for a bank. What I do is store the clean coffee cans and keep in the garage so they are outside. I will have to borrow my husband's nose to find out if there is an odor. Thanks for the nice compliment and thanks for responding.

Sorry to hear you've lost your sense of smell, that would be a tough sense to lose. I hear some people either over eat, or stop eating when that happens, only eating enough to keep going. wow

It was really tough at first but I learned to deal with it. Also lost my sense of taste but it has slowly improved. I did lose weight because everything tasted like cardboard..lol

How fun. Those days are always fun to remember and share. I made an Elmo bank for our granddaughter and when people come over to visit, they drop coins in it. It's slowly filling up!

Hello williamjisir. Good to hear from you again. It's been fun making these projects for our grandkids. I put coins in the banks so the little ones can hear it rattle. Not much they can play with so it sits on their dresser. Thanks for the nice compliment and for responding.

my grandmother used to make little coin banks out of OJ cans. She would fill them with pennies for us. We used to sort out the wheat pennies and then spend the rest on army men. The toy store clerks hated us but it was great to refill the cans after we bought our toys.

Hi Carolbee! I put your Big Bird Bank to the test... my 5 yo son and one of his friends. He said it was cool and he liked it and they both wanted to know who made it. He also asked if there was a pokemon bank... They're a boy, I should have known better. The survey of a small group of 5yo boys say that Carolbee's Big Bird Bank receives a .

Thanks so much, robin. Your response made me smile. Our little grandson loves it but he's only 3 so he hasn't moved to Pokemon just yet...lol I made other banks also and did make an Elmo bank for our new grandbaby. Am working on an Ernie bank right now in my spare time. Right now I am giving them as gifts since I don't believe I can sell them. Copyright laws might prevent me from doing this. I do have a question for you: would I write Muppets to get their approval about selling these items? I altered the pattern so it's not their exact pattern. I would hate to spend time in jail for doing something against copyright laws...lol

Hi carol! That is just so adorable! I'd like one of those for myself! That would make a great can for me to put my little things in that I am always losing and can't find a proper place for! I just love it! I love the colors and just love the design! Your grandkids are just so lucky! I wish I could do things like that! But, sadly when it comes to crafts I'm kind of hit or miss!

It really isn't difficult to make. All I did was cut plastic to fit the can. Next followed a pattern and put it on the plastic and then secured it in the back. If it was difficult, I wouldn't be able to figure it out. I used a Folger's plastic coffee can and slit the lid to drop money. Thanks for responding.

I used a Folger's, plastic coffee can. Put in the dishwasher when empty and let it air dry for a few days before using. Just copied my pattern onto the plastic canvas and made sure it was centered. Have all different colors of yarn so I could pick and choose. Am now working on an Ernie bank. Eventually will stop the Sesame Street characters. Thanks so much for the nice compliment and for responding.

I've seen 3 threads from you on this subject and all 3 projects were great. visit the homes of my family and you will see a number of picture frames, trinket boxes, tissue box covers and other plastic canvas projects in use. Some are gifts from over a decade ago and many have outlasted commercial products with the same purpose. Thier personal and hold sentimental value because someone took the trouble to make the project for us. I think they are a great gift. You can also find latch-hook rugs, Cross stitch projects, hand made quilts and hand knitted or crocheted blankets and throws. Crafts make the best gifts and are a great project to do with the younger ones in the family. They learn a skill, get pride from accomplishment and spend some quality time with you. There is a Saturday morning show on CBS called CAKE. it's about a teen girl with her own craft show. The show a lot of neat craft projects folks can take on with or for their kids and grandkids and it is a family program you can enjoy with the little ones. they recently did a really neat bank. They took a stuffed toy, opened the main seem in back, removed some stuffing, sewed in a pocket and a zipper to close it and turned the teddy bear into a teddy bank. Check it out for new Ideas or look for the site on the web at: http://www.kewlopolis.com/home/cake.htm

Sounds like your house is a display of craft items which is a great idea. I always did some sort of craft but never stuck with it as much as I do now with plastic canvas projects. I find it very relaxing. Thanks for the information about the craft shows on tv. Will have to check it out. Thanks for responding.
