When Do You Open Your Christmas Gifts?

When I was a kid, we always opened our gifts on Christmas Eve. We would all meet up at my grandmother's house (my mom, her two sisters, and all the kids...there are a bunch of us), they would make us go to bed around 8 o'clock and then wake us up at midnight and let us rip open our presents. "The quicker you go to sleep, the quicker you'll get to open your gifts", is what they'd always say. Christmas was so much fun. Now-a-days, we all have a separate Christmas then we'll start the little Christmas circuit...which is pretty similar to the Thanksgiving circuit. We'll spend an hour or two here and open gifts, then an hour or two there and open more gifts, then end up back at home. It's kinda sad, really. But what about you? How do you spend your Christmas? Do you open gifts on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day? Do you spend it with your entire family or just you immediate family? Didn't you enjoy it more as a child?

Hehe, my also opens the presents on Christmas Eve, but we didn't go to sleep. They sent us doing other things like caroling to other families or praying (yeah, my father is a little fanatic). I didn't like the idea, but I was a kid, and kids do anything for presents :D

Lol, that is very true. Kids will do anything for gifts. I think it's actually kinda cool that you guys went caroling. I always wanted to do that, but my family's not really in to that sort of thing. Plus, I'm pretty sure we all sound like a bunch of William Hungs, so I'm guessing we did the neighbors a huge favor by staying indoors, lol. Anyway, thanks for sharing.

In my family, as a kid we always had Christmas eve dinner, either at our house or my grandparents house. We would stay up till midnight then open our presents. Now with my family we would have the kids go to sleep like usual and wake them up in the morning and have Santa personally bring them one of their gifts. I think this year since my kids are a little older and wiser, we're going to have a big Christmas eve dinner with family and friends and have the kids go to be as usual. Only this year I'm going to wake them up at midnight so they can open their presents with everyone here. Merry Christmas everyone!

My parents let me and my sisters open our gifts on Christmas Eve night. We try to stay up and open them at midnight, but my parents are always tired or think that my sisters and I will be really tired the actual day of Christmas. Ridiculous! But I do enjoy opening all my gifts early.

I liked opening them on Christmas Eve, too. I don't really know what it is, but there's just something cool about doing it at night. Plus, it gave us more time to play with all of our new stuff on Christmas Day. Thank you for posting.

In my family we always got to pick one gift out every Christmas eve and open it. I would spend hours leading up to that day picking out exactly which one I wanted to open that night. My parents never put out the BIG present though till we were asleep that night but each year we thought we might just find it!! The rests of our presents always had to wait for in the morning and we were very eager to get them when we woke up. I have carried this on with my children and always let them pick just one present on Christmas eve.

You know what...I'm loving this idea. I'm thinking we should start doing this with the younger kids in the family. I think they'd love it, and it would help make Christmas feel more like Christmas. Thanks for sharing. And thanks for the idea! ;)

Yeah, I used to like having the entire family together and sharing Christmas. But all my family lives pretty close to each other...like within an hour of each other...so we get to see everybody basically all the time. So, getting together for Christmas isn't all that special. I mean, it would still be cool if we did it, but it would probably just be like any other day and the older adults would end up arguing or something, lol. Anyway, thanks for postin.

when i was a kid i remember, we also open our Christmas gifts on Christmas eve after we have eaten our nochebuena(Christmas eve meal). and on Christmas day we go to the house of our godparents and greet them merry Xmas, that's the time our godparents will give us their gifts for us. it was a lot of fun. but today that i'm older we don't go to our godparents anymore to get our gifts but instead we are the ones who give gifts for them.

Ah, so you guys got gifts on BOTH days. Lucky you. It's good that you give gifts to the elders now that you've grown up. I try to get stuff for my grandparents, but after I buy for all the kids and my parents, I hardly have any money left, lol. Oh, well...they know I love 'em. Thanks for sharing your past and present traditions.

LOL ha ha ha ha I really want to laugh to this issue. Every Christmas, my wife normally asked me to set up the christmas lights, the christmas tree and our small belen for the children to see the spirit of christmas, as of yesterday, gifts start filling up at the base of the tree and this normally happens every year. The question on when to open the gifts always makes me smile for my wife and my children normally was figthing for this. My wife wanted these gifts to be open by jan 7 of the next year which is three kings and she wanted that to be followed everytime. But , kids loves gifts to be open rigth away and i see them murmuring something to their mother and pleading for their gifts to be open after christmas so that they have something to play with the neighborhood just as the other kids displays their beautiful toys, but mother was very strict. So one time, feeling sorry for my kids pleading, at the middle of the night of 24th i open the gifts one by one selecting some toys and laid them beside the kids sleeping, normally as the kids wakes up in the morning, they were shouting with joy that Santa visited them while asleep. So mother cannot do anything but to pinch me. LOL Happy posting.

it really depends for me. the reasons is that my parents sometimes want to open it on christmas day. usually they just ask us what we want or they will just give me the card and buy the gift i want.

I always opened my gifts with my brother by waking early at 2 a.m. in the morning and creeping down the stairs to not disturb our parents. We always take the present wrapping off very delicately and then we compare our gifts.. I spend my christmas with my family, watching movies together, going to places like camping, etc..

Back in the day when I was a kid we would all get together either at our house or my grandparents house to have Christmas Eve dinner. We would all wait anxiously for midnight to arrive to open our gifts. Now with the family I have started we do it differently. Usually we have dinner on Christmas eve and have the kids go to bed like usual. After they go to sleep I put all the presents under the tree. When they wake up in the morning they're so excited to see everything under the tree. Sometimes my husband dresses up like Santa and hand delivers some gifts. This year I think will be different. The kids are older and I'm sure they would recognize their dad in costume. So I've decided that we're going to have a BIG Christmas eve dinner with friends and family at my house. I'll probably have the kids take a nap around 9 o'clock and wake them at midnight after Santa made his stop under our tree. Either way I know that we will all enjoy ourselves. :) Merry Christmas everyone!
