Some thoughts on the River storyline

Over the last few episodes, River Baldwin has changed from an almost saintly figure who seemed to be entirely vindicated into an unrepentant villain that has knowingly deceived everyone around him. I have to say this turn took me quite off guard because I started to really like the River character and I will miss him if he goes into hiding or gets carted off to jail as seems very likely, but I still think this particular storyline has been very interesting from beginning to end. River's backstory reminded me a lot of Bill Ayers, the terrorist who became infamous during the presidential campaign. In a way, River's turn even makes the comparison to Ayers even more perfect -- Ayers is also a guy who seems pretty unrepentant of his past terrorism and has profited from his actions (in terms of notoriety). Even though River has turned out to be not such a good guy, this storyline really brought out the best in Michael, who worked tirelessly to free his father, and it even showed the kinder side of Gloria, who risked Jeffrey's wrath to testify on River's behalf. Michael in particular seems to be so far beyond his Isabella/Christine days; he's really matured and become a better person. Jack could take notes.
With River also came Eden who I hope will be sticking around for a while. I liked the first actress who played her better (she brought more of an edge to the role, I thought...the new girl seems more sweet and innocent, which is also OK), but I've gotten used to the new actress. I think Eden gives the show a needed infusion of youth. I first watched Y&R in the "Mac and Billy" days as a teenager myself so I tend to think the show should always have some good teen characters. Just as Murphy is helping to balance the show by giving it another mature character, Eden is balancing it on the other end. And Noah needs someone to talk to for a while before he gets prematurely aged again!
In short, I think the River/Eden storyline has made Y&R a more interesting show. Yay for River and Eden!

I agree with all you've said! Yeah, River turned out to be a creep = but then we shouldn't have gotten so lulled into a false sense of security!!! They never let a good guy stay good!!! I wonder if Gloria stays in jail or maybe finally get out on bail, if River hears about it and comes back to save her or take her with him... that'd be interesting
I like Eden too - might have some interesting storylines. Y&R always has good kids lines - I started watching back when Lauren, Tracey, Danny and Paul were all in high school and Lauren was ragging on Tracey and her weight and all and Tracy had a crush on Danny - that was a good time.
I do hope they do a bit more with the kids - I 'm a grand mother, but still like watching those stories! The adults are often rather stupid and the kids are more smart!
I like Michael too. He tries so hard. I wasn't watching during his early days, but now he seems like a good guy! I saw the previews for his "It's a wonderful LIfe" episode on Friday - looks like it might be good!
Yeah, I was tiring of the constant Jabot/chancelor/victor storlines too. I like the Murphy and Marge story. I hope they keep them together when "marge" remembers who she is - that'd be cool to bring hte common guy into the mansion! And then maybe he isn't so common...maybe he is a T.Boone Pickens, just incognito to get away from the rat race! His Bait and tackle shop is just a front for something to do! That'd be a good story line too!

Awww, I wish I could have seen Lauren, Tracy, Danny, and Paul as teenagers, too. We definitely need our Y&R archive online! You're very right about the kids sometimes seeming more smart than the adults...Mackenzie as played by Ashley Bashioum comes to mind immediately as a very mature teen character. Cassie Newman was a pretty amazing mature child character as well. I thought both Bashioum and Camryn Grimes would go on to have nice acting careers, but neither one seem to be too active at the moment. I've heard that Bashioum is studying to be a plastic surgeon these days!
Michael's "wonderful life" was quite well done, I thought. I thought it was funny for Paul to be the angel, but he did a wonderful job with it. It did seem like history was being rewritten a bit, though. If Michael hadn't existed, I don't think Paul would have ever met Isabella...let alone be killed by her! Other than that, though, I think the episode did do a good job of showing the impact Michael has had on the characters closest to him. Jack was the only one who seemed to be better off. As corny as it is to rip off "It's A Wonderful Life", the execution of the corny idea was superb.

Yes, it was done well and it was fun to hear/remember the past. I wasn't watching during the Isabella time or the kidney transplant time. I would much rather see an episode like this than one based on the Christmas Carol with the past/present/future theme. I think they did a really good job with this one!
Seems like all the adults themes are are of greedy money hungry mongers! That and divorcing and remarrying! DOn't they do anything else in life?!?!?!?LOL!!
