Can this be done?

For several years I enjoyed using my computer that was running windows ME. It had a large hard drive and sufficient amount of memory. I had installed a cd burner and all the software for the programs that I normally liked to use. I could get online with it and never had trouble with a virus. As time went on though some of the companies upgraded their systems and they wouldn't work with my older operating system. Then some of the soft wear that I used a lot would not let me install the new years edition because it required XP or better. I finally broke down and bought a computer that was running XP. Now I could access the websites of all my companies and my new soft wear was working fine but some of my older programs and games that I loved would not work on XP. This was so frustrating but the only thing I knew to do was to use both computers. Now, the memory stick has gone bad on my XP computer and just this week the power supply on the ME computer quit working. They both use the same kind of power supply so I can change them and get one computer working but I will be right back to my original problem. I will only be able to do half of what I want to because of the restrictions of the operating systems. I had this idea that maybe there was some way that I could put both hard drives in the one computer and have some kind of switch to change from one to the other depending on which programing I needed at the moment. Does anyone have any ideas about if this can be done and what I would need to do to make it work? If this has been done before I'm sure someone here on mylot will know about it. And if it hasn't been done before maybe we can invent something new. If you have any ideas at all please respond to this discussion. We'll brainstorm them together.

First of all, why did you buy a new computer to run XP? you would have installed XP on the older machine itself. If you have bought a new one, its always good as it will have better hardware than the older one. Ok, now about your problem running softwares. I shall ask you to run XP on the new computer and use the compatibility option for the programs that you cannot run on XP. Install the old ME programs and go to properties of the executable file of the software. Now, there is a compatibility tab. Under that tab you can select Windows 98 so that the software runs in XP. By the way, if today you are using softwares that are not compatible with XP, they are really old. You should install the latest version of those programs. Can you list some of the ME programs that you cannot run on XP?

I didn't but either one of these computers new actually. They were both built by a teenage computer geek who was the son of a friend of mine. Unfortunately I have moved far away from where he lives so I can't get him to do this for me and will have to do it myself. Also I didn't want to upgrade the one running ME to run XP because I knew then that certain programs being older would not work on XP. I am interested in how I would use the compatibility option. Is there a way to make XP run the older programs correctly? The programs that won't run right on XP are mostly games that I could live without but if I can find a way to keep them it would be nice. The other thing that is on the hard drive that is running ME is a lot of research that I have in folders. These are important because I can no longer access the websites where this info was originally stored.

new memory will cost you $25-50 (usd) new power supply prolly close to $100 thats not too much to keep both machines...better yet buy a used computer that has both things you need + extra parts for the future! used computers can go for as little as $25 bucks!

I've already got a garage full of used computers that I've bought at yard sales ect. The only ones you can get as cheap as you say are the older ones running windows 98 or something like that. Although if these still work they are good for small kids to learn on none of the parts like memory or power supplies would do me any good because they are to old and would not be compatible. Not to mention that I don't have the money to invest in parts. The power supply these are using is the ATX which is hard to find used and the memory stick is ddr ram.

I am not a techical guy but I guess you can do that in XP you can have multi boot system but as far as I know you need to reinstall one OS in that one that you will be working on. Well if you are working on XP then you ave to reinstall the ME in it and from there everytime you will bootup it will start to ask you which OS are you booting.

Yup I've installed once in my PC UBUNTU Linux OS. Everytime I boot up there is a message that ask me which OS to bootup with. I guess with 2 Microsoft OS it could also be done.

I wish I had the courage to set up a linux system. I actually bought the softwear off of ebay but haven't been able to get anyone to tell me what I need to know to set it up.

That's what I needed to know. I couldn't figure out how the computer would know which OS to use. I didn't want to give it a case of schizophrenia. You are saying that each time I turn the computer on it will ask me which one I want to use?
