Is vegetarian diet OK for baby? I want to be a vegetarian and currently eating less meat and fish and I wish my daughters can follow my diet too. But my husband is worry about their vitamin and protein intakes. We can search for how much the vegetables are rich in vitamins and proteins but at the same time we also lose them in the process of cooking. So should we give the baby supplement to let them have sufficient vitamins and protein intakes?

Humans are omnivores which is to say that we have evolved to live on a mixed diet of both vegetable and animal origin. Personally I don't think that the Vegan meat free diet is very healthy for adults let alone a baby because a diet that is totally meat free has no vitamin B12 in it which is an essential vitamin which is only available naturally in meat. Vegans generally get around this by taking a supplement which is hardly "natural". Also you have to very careful in mixing and matching vegetable protein sources to get the same amino acid balance and protein quality that you would get from meat. If you get the balance wrong, you will in the long run suffer from protein deficiency disease.

Thanks very much for your respond jwfarrimond. When my brother first decided to be a vegetarian, all members in the family and relatives disagree. I didn't disagree because it was the choice he made for himself. But of course I worry about nutrient sufficiency intake. Right now, he had been a vegetarian for about 10 years but so far so good. Sometimes I told him that I worried that about his health though till now he said he's fine. But who knows what will come after 15-20 years of being a vegetarian? That's why being a vegetarian still puts me in dilemma. He told me once that one of his acquaintance is a vegetarian family who had raised 3 kids as vegetarian babies from the beginning and they grow healthy, strong and smart. See? But I'll consult this issue to my pediatrician.

I've dabbled in vegetarianism myself in the past, and I found the book "Diet for a small planet" to be very useful in discussing the nuts and bolts of a Vegan diet. In the end though, I decided that it was illogical to ignore perfectly good food. The ideal diet for a human is in fact mainly vegetable based, fruits, vegetables and grains. Meat should only form a small part of the diet. That's the problem with the usual diet of "civilised man," far to much meat. according to dietitians, an adult only needs about 20 - 50 grams of protein a day, most of which can come from vegetable sources and the rest from meat.

How could you! I know its not yet ratified by various medical research but I will not subscribe to putting a veggy diet for babies. I have four kids healthy and looking it so at least I know a bit about what I am saying. It will be better to give the the stipulated balanced diet and let them grow normally till they reach a certain age then one can decide or they take the decision to go veggy. Even if you have a dog you feed the puppy mormally as they grow they eat once or twice a day apart from the eat ins. So how much more a baby. keep cool.

Don't worry davido. I'm not making my daughters vegetarians yet. But currently, they prefer veggies because it's easier for them to chew than meat. But my oldest doesn't really like blendered meat either also meatballs, sausage. Thanks very much for your respond and concern.

Your husband may be right about it since a growing baby needs lot of nutrient from other solid food. Although teaching your baby to eat veggies is a good start since many babies are not used to eating that. Baby's eating habit can still be mold when they are young as they depend solely on what their parents feed them. But I guess there's nothing wrong giving them meat or fish from time to time to give them the right nutrition too.

Well, right now I'm giving my daughters all, veggies, meat and fish. But you know what? They prefer non meat section of food. So my oldest like fried tofu, tempe, potato, carrots, spinach. The youngest are much less the same only no fries. Not much of the meat and fish. I tried to give nuggets but she doesn't like it. So, mostly I gave them stocks, like chicken stock. Thanks for responding rsa101.

Talk to a nutritionist, preferably one with a whole foods background. The pure and simple fact is that babies do not need any meat or animal products other than mother's milk until they are well over the age that most mothers wean their children. Millions of people raise healthy babies and children on a meatless diet because of their religious beliefs. The key is to make it a healthy vegetarian diet and to be aware of the nutrients in the foods that you're making. Here's a link to an interview with Christine Beard, author of the New Vegetarian Baby and one to an article with tips on choosing foods for vegetarian and vegan children. You might find them interesting. http://www.medicinenet.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=54278 http://www.babyzone.com/mom_dad/home_food/article/raising-vegetarian-children

Thanks very much for your information chameleonsdream. I'll check the websites. Here in my country most doctor doesn't prefer vegetarian diet, especially for babies. So that's the dilemma, even a person like a doctor disagree with this kind of diet.

First off talk to the pediatrician about everything. I think there is a vitamin for vegetarian children. Mention that to the doctor. I still think a baby is too young and maybe you'll should wait. I really don't know for sure about the facts though.

no! absolutely not! it is not safe for the baby, especially. if he/she is still one year old and less. it would be dangeroues you know because there are chemicals that might not be sufficient or ok with the baby. his/her system is still changing and evolving, if you will feed her/him with such kind of supplements, then your baby might be in danger, it would be not now but at the later age, he/she will might suffer so DON'T...

I would not recommend that you take a chance with your baby's health in this manner. Your baby's body and mind are still developing so nutrition is very important at this age. If you want to be a vegetarian, that's fine, but your baby needs a balanced diet as well as infant vitamins. It's too important.
