Your cat could have a problem with is thyroid which needs a blood test to diagnose. It is fairly easy to treat, just a daily pill which I mashed into the food. If your cat is eating mostly dry food, switch to canned food twice a day. Canned food is healthier for your cat as it has fewer fillers and more protein. Is he overweight? If he is thin, then thyroid problems are more likely. He needs a vet check. Some vets will work out a payment plan with you so it is more affordable. You could try dragging a string around behind you. Most cats will chase it, and both of you get exercise. Good luck with your cat. I know how worrying it is when they are off.

I have three indoor cats who are pretty lazy themselves. Try getting some cat nip and/or one of those small red laser pointers. My cats go insane for both. And like mCat19 said, strings work ideally as well. I use old shoelaces and the cats prefer those over store bought cat toys. Good luck!!

Mommiecat has given some good ideas, I'd add that you might try playing with him (assuming that he's not sick of course.)

"Problem" could be the right word to describe the situation. How old is your cat? How long has the excessive sleeping been going on? He could be sick or anemic. If you can afford it, I would take him to a vet and have him get a check up. If not, may be give him liquid vitamins from a pet store. Also what kind of food are you feeding him? I find if I give my cats the cheaper food they are hungrier more often. Giving them food with less fillers or junk make them hungrier less often and actually gives them more energy. If your cat is an older cat, say over 10 years, he will naturally sleep more. It is good if he has a good appetite, but try to give him the best food you can afford.
