I haven't used my laptop for sometime. It is running on Windows XP. I start the computer and suddenly it says that Windows Updates have been downloaded and installed. Computer will restart. Meanwhile, I haven't even been online so how did it get the updates? This is puzzling me. Interested to hear all points of view. Thanks.

Does anyone else have access to your laptop? Are you using wireless? These are just questions that hopefully will find some kind of answer. As far as I am aware, and anyone can correct me on this if I'm wrong, you can't download updates whenever the computer is turned off completely. Do you have a password to gain entry to your desktop? Do you have the one user account on your laptop? i.e. Adminsistrator? Anyway, good luck, I hope that you resolve this issue. Andrew

Hi Andrew, Great to hear from you. I have a user account and an admin account. I rarely log onto the admin and don't use when surfing the net. The message upon powering on and accessing the user account and Not online yet tells me that the computer will restart and that updates were recently installed. No, no one has access to my computers but me and do have a password on the admin account. This message I get is only on the user account and find it strange because for one, I am not even online when I get it (network cable not plugged into the laptop and when I am in the user account, I can't get downloads or windows updates because it isn't an admin account so this is really puzzling me. I appreciate your response. Thanks a bunch.

You probably downloaded some updates last time you were online... and the installation was not complete when you turned off your computer.

Windows update may be already downloaded before. It may happen that for any type of failure 9like power or some software problem) the update couldn't be installed when you shut down your laptop for the last time. Now when you started it.It detect an update and then installed them causing a restart.I think that was the thing.

Hi, Thank you for your response. I was thinking the same thing. Although since I never seen a balloon on my task bar prior to shutting down the time before, this got me wondering as this is not the first time this has happened.
