AJAX Beginner Problem. PLEASE HELP!!!

I am just starting AJAX. I have made the first program, and I cannot get the input button to work. At first I thought it must be a problem with the path, but no. All of the code is typed correctly. The input button works if I type alert("String); , but I cannot get it to work using javascript and my .js file. What am I doing wrong. I am getting so mad and frustrated that I could trash my entire computer with a hammer. I have programmed before. I think it must be a problem in the installation of AJAX. Does anyone have any advice? It would be greatly appreciated.
