I guess when a hard drive is about to come to the end of its life then it will let you know somehow. There are a couple of things that you can do if you don't do them already. Firstly, I use the Disk Defragmenter utility once per month. It is essential to do this if your want your drive operating at optimum performance. You should also use the operating system to scan your drive for errors, you can perhaps do this once per month as well. There is a bootable disk by Seatools which you can use in order to check your hard drive for any major problems. Checkout the seatools website, this bootable disk is free, you just need a floppy drive. Good luck. Andrew

There really is not any practical way to increase the lifespan of a hard disk. All hard disks will eventually fail. That's why hard disk manufacturers give what is called Mean time between failures (MTBF). MTBF is the mean (average) time between failures of a system. Calculations of MTBF assume that a system is "renewed", i.e. fixed, after each failure, and then returned to service immediately after failure. The average time between failing and being returned to service is termed mean down time (MDT) or mean time to repair (MTTR). So in conclusion it is best to backup all your data and be prepared to say your goodbyes to your (until recently) faithful first hard disk. :)

There is no secret in increasing your harddisk drives life. No special software of some sort are needed. You just need to take care of it and not abuse it. A Sample would be, do not unplug your PC while it is still running nor press the power button while your pc is still running. It's because your harddisk drive will not be able prepare it self and position it's needle like part that will read the disk. Often times improper shutdown would cause your disk to be scratched by it.
