My son is 6 and he just recently started wearing glasses. I was worried about him wearing them. I was worried he'd be rough with them or not want to wear them. He's been good about taking care of them but has asked me if he had to wear them a lot. I've told him he's supposed to wear them all the time. he doesn't have too much problem with them. THe ey dr said he has astigmatism too. SHe said he may grow out of it, but we'd have to wait & see. So i was wondering how many of you had children that wore glasses when they were young and later on got to stop wearing them?

One of my cousion is only 8 and has glasses on their eyes I think it is related to the TV and the food they eat. More TV and less vitamins is what asking for the trouble. This is not good as glasses are the best enemy of eyes. People wear glasses and think that their eyes will be recovering soon but it doesn't happen and their eyes gets more worse.

I make sure my son eats a healthy diet & he doesn't watch a whole lot of tv. I agree with barb though that it's inherited via genes. My father, mother, his paternal g'ma & myself all wear glasses, too. thanks.

well i think that food has some part to play on our vision. if we eat enough of foos rich in vitamin then we will help protect our eyes suffer vision problems as i have read in some health reoprts. it is confirmed actually. but of course still the way we use our eyes will determine also but foods plays a lot of role in protecting our eyes. so even if you expose your eyes in television or computer moderately with proper food you suffer less problem toy our eyes that those who have not taken adequate vitamin A in their diets.

My son started wearing them at six, too, for the same thing. He wore them throughout school all the time except in sports. He later got to the point he didn't have to wear them too much at work. He still sees good without them, but he says, using the computer lots gives him a headache unless he wears his glasses. Your son might be able to wear contacts later, though. But my son had one cornea that was shaped more like a football rather than round, so he can't wear contacts.

Astigmatism is when the cornea of the eye is shaped like a rugby ball rather than being spherical. It causes the eye to have two focal points rather than one and can lead to strain and headaches if uncorrected. Astigmatism is the 'Cylinder' value in a prescription. It seems that it is usually inherited but can also be caused by an eye injury so as far as your son out growing it depends on whether he has inherited the problem or it was caused by an eye injury. it can be corrected by laser eye surgery. If you and or your husband wear glasses a for the Astigmatism then chances are that he won't out grow it. These two web iste may help you. http://www.allaboutvision.com/conditions/astigmatism.htm http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_a_stigmatism

I don't have any kids. but I myself got glasses when I was 7 years old. My eyesight was really bad, still is, and back then I had to wear thick coke bottle lenses. I remember coming from the optometrists and saying, "Mommy, there's numbers on the houses!" Ha ha! I never had too many problems taking care of them except twice the frames got busted in a fight. And that was years later. I think your son will be fine. I wouldn't get him wire rims, maybe. But at least today no one has to wear coke bottles anymore.

Hello barb42...having a cornea shaped like a football is what you call having astigmatism in your eyes, thats what I've got, they always told me that mine were football shaped not round like everyone else. If you read in my post below yours, they do make contacts that will correct astigmatism, my doctor has asked me if I wanted to try it, because mine are so bad, but my eyes get so irritated and are so sensitive that I can't wear them, but he said it only works if you wear them, so you might want to try those out with your son. I'm sure your eyedoctor would know more about it. I knew the name of them, but I can't remember what it is...Have a good day

I didn't realize that was what they called astigmatism. My son is 40, but he still can't wear contacts. But he doesn't have to wear his glasses to drive. In fact, I hardly ever see him with them on anymore. But he does wear them at work when on the computer he said.

I had to start wearing glasses at age 12 and should have had them at age 9 or 10 but my parents did not realize I could not see well until a teacher pointed it out. At age 59 still wear glasses. Two of my sons have astigmatisms like me and at ages 36 and 34 both still wear them. My husband however wore glasses from age 12 to age 22 then did not need them unitl a couple years ago again. So far three of my grandchildren need and wear glasses. One has a lazy eye and is slowly being correctd she will need them the rest of her life. The other two might out grow the glasses the eye doctor said if they wear them all the time for 2-4 years.

my daughter is 11 and has been wearing glasses for a couple of years and though she is not that rough and tumble, we do have to take them back to sears about once a month just to get straightened because of her taking gym and playing outside. fortunately for us, the people in the optical department at sears are very nice and friendly to us as we go there quite often and dont charge us for fixing our glasses!

Dear friend, I had seen those kids with big glass on their faces giving a genius look. But I do know how much they like that spectacles. I was using glasses from my 1st class on wards as one of my teacher found that I had short sight. But later I removed in between as it felt uncomfortable. Still I hope wearing glasses for childern would be not secure but still they may have to comfortable with it for their own benefit.

Well I hope your son does outgrow it, but don't get your hopes up. I'm not a doctor so you should listen to what your doctor says, I'm just speaking from experience, I've been wearing glasses since I was about 6 yrs.old, I am now 37 yrs. old and I'm still wearing them, I too have astigmatism, and I have it bad, and I have to wear my glasses to be able to see right. My doctor told me that if it wasn't for the astigmatism, my eyesight would be 20/20 in other words perfect. I think now they make contacts that correct it, but my eyes are so sensitive that I can't wear them. I do hope his eyes get better, and he won't have to wear the glasses anymore, but hey they aren't so bad once you get used to them.
