Honey contains many things besides sugar. The sugar in itself is good because it is partially pre-digested by the bees. It also contains pollens and other substances which give it antibiotic properties. Before the age of about two, humans can be sensitised to pollen in honey, so there is some risk of developing an allergic reaction to pollens which can lead to hay fever in later life. After about two, children have developed their immune system enough to tolerate most allergens. Once the immune system is developed, the pollens and other things in honey actually help to train and support the immune system.
