Any tips on stopping the cat destroying my Xmas decorations?

Right, I have a problem... a very cute, cuddly and adorable one called Max!
He is literally ripping my house, and to be more specific, my christmas decorations to bits! He keeps climbing up the middle of my christmas tree and pulling it over, stealing the chocolates and baubles from the tree and hiding them in random places, ready for me to stand on and hurt my feet and he even stole my advent calendar and ripped it open!
Any hints and tips on stopping my cat being such a little tearaway at Christmas? He's not usually like this and aside from strangling him (I'm joking!) I have no idea how to stop him!

Maybe removing all the baubles and such? Cats are tricky. Good luck!

Mentholatum rub on the bottom of the tree and where ever you can safely put it . He won't like the smell.
We had a cat who liked to open presents.
