Well I have to hand it to Obama. He pissed off one of the top 3 most useless people in our already useless congress with his decision. Everyone here knows I'm no fan of Obama, but he has the right to choose whoever he wants for the inauguration. Now Barney Frank, who is apparently gay, is upset since Rick Warren is well known for being against gay marriage and comparing homosexuality to incest and polygamy.
I say "Tough". Good luck finding a pastor or priest who ISN'T against gay marriage.
Either way, I'm just glad to see that Obama wasn't afraid to piss off one of the congressional leaders in his own party. Frank is useless and should have never been reelected anyway.

I think what no one understands is that Obama is making an attempt to reach across the asile in every way including having civil discussions with those who hold differences of opinion from the "party" line.
Barney Frank is openly gay. He is mad because Warren is against Homosexuality, referring to it in the same vein as pedophilia, incest, and other things that most believe truly are perversions. The GLBT community is angry for the same reason, they feel that Obama is betraying them in his selection of Warren.
Funny thing is that many are angry at Warren for accepting the invitation believing that his acceptance is a betrayal of his beliefs.
Both men have said that they hold many beliefs and many standards in common, including their desire to eradicate poverty, improve education, improve housing, improve community activism. They also both agree that marriage is between a man and a woman.
Where they disagree is that there should be Civil Unions which hold the same legal rights and priviledges for Gay couples that Marriage has for Heterosexual couples. This is the fundamental difference on this subject. Of course they disagree on the Abortion issue.
So the reality is that this is a selection that has all sides fuming. But both men say they want to prove it is possible to have civil dialog with those with whom there is fundamental disagreements. Both men say that it is possible to find agreement and ways in which to work together even where there are fundamental differences.
While I personally don't like Rick Warren's doctrine I find his selection by Obama thought provoking and under these circumstances even appropriate. It is time this country set aside differences and begin to seek common ground.

WOW, your last sentence really says it all! I've repeated this quote from Obama before but I think it bears repeating; he was speaking about how he'd appeared at Warren's church a few years ago and he said, "We can disagree without being disagreeable" and I couldn't be less disagreeable about that! I think the only way this country can ever heal is if we focus on the many things we all have in commond instead of the few things we differ on.

The whining and gnashing of teeth over Obama's choice of Warren to *say a prayer* at the inauguration continues to tickle me!
This event is not about pleasing any political group or either party so, really, who cares what Barney Frank thinks about it? If he's so upset...he should stay home and read a book.

Barney Frank is "apparently gay"? Taskr, I'm going to assume that was a typo since Frank is OPENLY gay and has been for years. Anyway, I have no problem with Obama's choice of Rick Warren to deliver the invocation at the Inauguration but I do understand how some gays would be offended by some of the things Warren has said. However, I like what Obama said, that we can disagree without being disagreeable, and I do realize Obama and Warren for all their differences also some many common goals.
Back to Barney Frank: he was just interviewed on TV moments ago, right before I saw this discussion. I wish I'd have taken notes so I could give you some of his direct quotes but what I took from Frank's comments was that he IS disappointed with the choice of Warren for the invocation because of his equating homosexuality to incest, polygamy and pedophilia but he still says he's looking forward very much to working with Obama and that he is proud to have supported him and voted for him and expects great things from his Administration.
As to whether or not Frank should have been reelected, I'd say that was up to his constituents. There are plenty of members of Congress I wouldn't have voted for but if they're not in my district there's nothing I can do about it and I realize those who voted for them had every right to do so.

The media is going to do everything they can to get negative comments from anyone they believe will be unhappy with this selection. I also applaud Obama for this obvious attempt to truly reach across the aisle and show he will be President of the entire United States and all its people and not just of those who share his every view. Meanwhile, the media is going to continue doing what the media does and that's search out anyone they believe is going to give them something to keep this "controversy" going and obviously when they do find some like Barney Frank to interview they're going to play the most offensive clips of Warren talking about gays to get their reaction! Just as obviously, if and when a gay person hears someone comparing them to someone who commits incest or to a child molester, they're going to criticize him!

This was one thing I was happy to see Obama do. Some on the extreme left and extreme right want only what they deem to be rights and privileges while those of us in the middle wonder about the rights of the many instead of the few.

I'm sorry, Taskr, I shouldn't have put it that way about you not knowing Barney Frank is gay. Sometimes I forget everyone isn't the political junkie that I am and have been probably since before you were born...lol! Please don't take any offense because there was certainly none intended. I understand your point about incest and polygamy but I guess I was thinking about cases of the former when an older relative molests a younger one and of the latter when old men with several wives take a new bride who is still a child.
As far as Warren goes, I've said before I like him even though I disagree with him on many issues. I disagree with you about Frank being mad because Warren's a Republican; I honestly think it's because of his outspokenness about gay issues and I can understand how gays would feel a bit sensitive about some things Warren has said but I don't think a big issue should be made of it. My feeling is the media will try to keep it alive for a few more days but by the day of the Inauguration it will be pretty much forgotten.

I figured that's what most people think of, but that kind of thinking could just as easily be taken by people who only think of NAMBLA when they think of gay men. As weird as it may sound one of the 2008 presidential candidates was previously married to their second cousin. I'm not going to name names though to avoid any unnecessary smears.

Barney can just go cry on his boyfriend's shoulder. Seriously, these people voted for Obama because they thought he was a liberal and had a liberal agenda. Wouldn't being liberal also include accepting the views of all and not just some?
