Do you pack light, or do you pack heavy?

When you go on a trip, do you pack light or do you pack heavy? Does it depend on the trip, how long it is, and what you going to be doing and with who? For me, all of these things are definitely a factor! For example, if I am flying somewhere for a weekend getaway by myself, I pack as light as possible. One small overnight bag will do the trick. However, if I am going to be with other people, I may pack a little heavier. I don't really want to be wearing the same shirt every time they see me. The same goes for times like holidays when I am going to be visiting people. Or if I may be doing something where I may get dirty or sweaty. So what about you? Does it matter, or do you just pack the same every time?

Besides on the number of days, it also depends on the mode of transport. If I'm taking a plane, bus or train, then I would pack light (whatever I need only) - I hate to carry luggage around. However if we are driving to our destination, I could dump everything in the car-boot; usually end up packing more clothes than required!

That makes good sense lazeebee, good explanation of when and why you would pack more. Thanks for your response to this discussion, and have a great day!

That's true, the skivvies don't take up nearly as much room in your luggage as the jeans. And considering you have to unpack all of this stuff when you get back, why not pack light. Thanks for your response in this discussion checapricorn, and have a great day posting!

I used to overpack all the time, and after the last trip that I did with too much luggage decided enough was enough and learned how to pack light. My method was packing for the unexpected. If I thought there was a chance I needed to look my best, I packed everything needed to look great. If I thought it might get cold I packed 2 sweaters. If I thought I might run into Prince William, I packed a ballgown. No, I'm kidding about the last, but the thought did cross my mind. Now I pack everything a week ahead of time and then throughout that week I re-evaluate and try to decide what I REALLY need to bring and usually end up unpacking 50% of it. I went on a backpacking trip to Europe this summer with just a 69 Litre backpack and I even had room to shove in all the new clothing and souvenirs I bought.

I love your sense of humor breepeace! That part about Prince William was great! I think before I started flying I really did over pack. Especially if I was going to be gone for 5 days or more. Like you said, couple of sweaters and a couple of blouses next thing you know you have a bag for everyday. LOL Thanks for your response, and have a great day posting.

I remember when I used to have a job where I would have to travel on occasion. I never seemed to pack the right things. LOL Sounds like you are always prepared and I think that is great. Thank you for your response in this discussion. I hope you have a good evening.

Thanks for your response JummyTao. Short and sweet, I like that. If I go on a trip by myself and it is only for a short weekend or something, I am the same way. Just the bare necessities. I usually try to get by with just a carry-on bag whenever possible. Where will your next traveling adventure take you?

For my last trip I learned to travel lightly because the airline allowed luggage of 15kg for both me and my toddler son. Packing was a challenge and I ended up having to pay extra to take my son's light weight travel cot. During our trip to food went down and I bought souvenirs that I had to pack carefully. I was worried the luggage would be more than 15kg going home but luckily it was just within the limit. My toddler son and I will be flying to Cape Town in January and I will begin thinking about packing as light as possible. We will be packing warm weather clothes compared to last time and sun cream. I have to check if my son will still fit in his travel cot. He has soya drink powder and catheters that would be a nightmare if they got lost. On a camping trip this summer I had way to much luggage. When I took my son on a weekend away we had a small amount of baggage. For a trip of two weeks or more I take a fair amount of luggage. "Take double the money and half the luggage" is wise advice. I take travel wash but my clothes end up looking creased.

Thanks for your response in this discussion, Maximax8. It is always nice to hear about the travels of you and your toddler. It sounds like you have just about gotten it down to a science as far as the traveling goes. Hope you will enjoy your trip to Cape Town and have a safe flight.

Hi there kykidd! I love traveling! Each time I travel or go on a trip, I always pack light. I am the type of person who always travel light. I always make space for some stuffs I am planning to buy in the place I am traveling to. I always travel light but I end up going home with heavy bags. hehehe!

Hi dolce_vita78! I love your outlook. It's good to travel light, but leave room in your bags for some shopping or souveniers!!! Thanks for your response in this discussion, and have a great day!

In the past, I've packed relatively heavy to go on week-long cruises. I'd have my carry-on bag, a suitcase and a garment bag to keep my shirts and formal outfits from getting wrinkled. With the airlines charging luggage fees now, I'm looking for ways to cut back on packing so everything can fit into one suitcase. Originally, I brought my laptop computer so I could transfer pictures from my digital camera. Now I've got a smaller and lighter device which transfers the pictures to a CD. I'm planning to only take a 4 or 5-day trip next year, so I won't have to pack as much. I could probably leave the garment bag at home and just bring the suitcase and carry-on.

I think it is a good idea to pack as light as possible, but then again, you don't want to be stuck buying something that you could have brought from home. The airlines are making it a challenge for anyone who is going to be away for more than 5 days. I can manage with a carry on bag for that long, but after that it just won't fit. Thanks for your response to this discussion, and have a great day!

Hi there, well I always pack somewhere in the middle I guess, not too heavy, not too light! It does depend on who I am with though - if I am intending on impressing by dressing, than I may end up packing more than I need, just in case! It's always good to be prepared right??!
