Charging for delivery

I don't order pizza much anymore now that I live in the boonies and there is not a place that delivers to me. I ordered pizza from my brothers house tonight and I was kind of surprised to find out that they charge $2 for delivery now. I guess delivery drivers were not making enough, so they started charging. Does the place you order from charge for delivery? Do you tip less because of it?

If the places I order from do that, they don't tell us, and it's not noticable. But there are only a couple places that deliver to us, so we usually would go pick it up from somewhere else.
I used to be a pizza delivery driver at Pizza Hut years ago. I started there about 9 years ago... wow, just realized how old I'm getting, lol.
Anyways, at the time I started, drivers used to get like 50 cents per delivery on top of our tip and actual wages. They didn't charge the customer anything extra at the time, this money just came out of the drawer. Actually how it worked was in the beginning of the night we got a $15 bank, to use as change for the customers. At the end of the night the computer told us how much we owed. It would deduct the 50 cents per delivery and we give back whatever is left of the $15 after that. Once in a great while I actually had them owe me!
Anyways, that was the summer that gas spiked to $1.50 for the first time, and everyone was saying it could be at $2 before the end of the summer. And we were all saying we'd have to quit delivering because we would't be able to afford that gas! Funny how things change, isn't it?
So that's about the time Pizza Hut started charging $1 per delivery. Sadly though, because of that charge, and the cost of gas rising so quickly, people stopped ordering as much. It got to a point I wasn't earning as much as I once was.
Hubby had worked at Pizza Hut off and on for over 10 years. At that point I think he'd been there about 6 or 7 years. He was part time, but he used to tell me how he'd made nearly $200 on some nights, in a single night, just in tips. When I worked the same night the best I could do was $80 at that point. Things were just changing too quickly.
At that point I quit delivering for awhile. Went on to a few other pointless jobs. After the twins were born hubby became store manager at Pizza Hut, so I went back part time as a driver again, but within a few months I switched to being a server. I made the same amount of money, although my wages were less, but I didn't have to spend the money on gas or the wear and tear on my car. It worked out better.

When I used to get pizza delivered all the time the delivery was free I thought. I ordered from Papa John's online and used my debit card, so I saw exactly what they charge for. That is the only reason I knew the amount.
One of my brothers used to deliver pizza for a small pizza place in the town we grew up in. He used to make really good money some nights and not much some other nights.

I do not order pizza often for delivery. When I was working there was a deli that would charge one dollar per order for delivery. I guess the delivery people were not receiving adequet tips, so with the delivery charge they were quaranteed something. I know some of the women were really cheap, after I would tally the order and ask for tip money, some of them would only give a dime, and they had a six or seven dollar order.
If I was charged a delivery fee, I would give a lesser tip.

Yes, They do charge at my house. It is too help the company to pay the drivers. To me it really have to do something with the economy is doing so poorly. To me it is not even worth being a delivery charge since it is just putting wear and tear on the vehicles. To me it depends if i have extra money or not to tip the driver or i would give out a little change.Just be glad that you get something to eat instead of like those homeless that dont have nothing to eat.

Actually, the delivery charge helps the driver's pay for their gas and upkeep of their vehicles. The pizza place isn't responsible for that since the drivers are using their own vehicles to deliver the pizzas. That delivery charge has nothing to do with the driver's tips. The tip is up to the customer when their order is delivered to them.
The only reason I know this is I work at a pizza place and have first hand experience.

Yes they do charge quite a bit now for delivery where I am. And I do tip less when the weather is good. If the weather is rough, I do give a bit more. But they do raise the delivery charge every once in a while. My hubby now does the carry out option more than he used to.

Yes, they charge for deliver around here too. It is more than $2 too. I live within walking distance of a pizza place and I have often considered paying the delivery fee and tipping generously---the hold up is that everytime I order a pizza from this place they tell me the wait is at least an hour. Even in my most lazy moment I don't want to pay extra for an inconvenience.
