why do some sites ask you to enter a security code to log in???

this question has been in my find for some time now i have logged onto many sites which require me to enter a security code after entering my log in id and password which are just a few letters or numerals but whats the need for them what kind of security do they provide to our account if a person is trying to hack and knows the id and password he can still log in as the code is just a useless thing please clarify this to me if some one knows a thing or two about this???

It's possible that the sites do the security codes to avoid the people who have autokeying programs...whatever that was called. They want to be sure that the person doing the keying is a real person and not the computer.

yes CRSunrise thats the reason but on some sites the security code is so tough to recognize that it takes few refreshes.

you are absolutely right CR the security code is actually used to stop people from using these malicious softwares to signup in there system. If they dont do it there will be thousands of mallicious signups to their site within minutes....

The only time I have had to do this is when playing MapleStory online, but I have no idea why they require it. It's annoying!
