Santa Claus asking for gifts and alms in the street?

Have you ever seen a Santa Claus out in the streets but instead of giving gifts , he is asking for gifts and alms. I have seen one and it was weird, because the kids' notion of Santa was "tinted" . How would you react if you have seen one Santa acting this way? What would you tell your children? How would you explain this? Are your kids still unaware of the reality of Santa Claus? or do they still believe in Santa and all that stuff?
