When can we consider life as beautiful? It is by being rich and famous? According of Epicurus, (one of the major philosophers) instead of aiming for the creation of a good society, people should find means in order to avoid pain? In fact, he gives eight counsels, to avoid physical pain and mental troubles: 1. do not fear God 2. do not worry about death 3. do not fear pain 4. life a simple life 5. pursue pleasure wisely 6. make friends and be a good friend 7. be honest in your business and private life; 8. avoid fame and political ambition According to Epicureans, by following the eight counsels, the human being will then be capable of obtaining a good and meaningful life? Would you consider this as a fullfillment or a satisfaction of ones life? Would you believe of Epicurus philosophy?

that's Epicurus's philosoph, not everyone's philosoph. every one have their own definition of happyiness. A good meal will make someone happy. a good sleep will make someone happy. a nice suit will make someone happy. ~~~~~~ so, I don't consider this as a fullfillment or a satisfaction of ones life. we should chase our owns.lol happy mylotting.

Happiness is subjective. It differs from one person to another. One can be happy just by being loved and respected but most people become happy when they have the money so they can buy anything they want. I think to be truly happy, we should be contented with what we have and never aspire for more.

Yes I think we can to a degree. To me happiness is being around people that you care about even if they are or are not family. Having a job you like and following your dreams I tried to do these things on a regular bases.

Along with the grow of the age,the definition of happiness become more and more vague.Anyhow,i think happiness can not be built on philosophy, happiness is determined by people's attitude and belief.Let life be simple,we might find happiness easier.

Im a bit more existential in that i believe that happiness will come only when you begin fulfilling your purpose, That is, once the meaning of your existence is revealed and once you act to fulfill your purpose. Sadness on the otherhand, is when you realize your purpose but choose not to act. In between the two is just confusion and lots of learning hehehe.

This is a very good topic for you to start because you actually made me ask myself how can i obtain happiness in my life. As a teenager, I got lots of dreams, needs and wants and those are really difficult to achieve. Because of failure, I usually hurt myself a lot, emotionally and not physically that is. For the list that you provided for us to avoid pain, I'm not having any problems with the numbers 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, and 8 but for the rest, I think I have to evaluate myself. I'm living a simple life and yet I wanted more. I don't ask money and stuff from my parents anymore that's why it's difficult for me because I want this and that but I don't have the money. And with number 7, I am not saying I'm a liar but I lie to myself just to convince myself that I'm happy and I don't have any problems. I guess if I will be able to eliminate those problems I have, I will be able to live a more meaningful life, even though I consider my life meaningful already.

this is good. another thing is to have an open heart. be kind and generous, help whenever we can and love the people around us and being forgiving too. I think helping people always makes one happy.

That really great and i beleive in his concept and he's absolutely right about what he has told and i accept it..yes we really have to be a simple person with no expectation in life to be happy and expectations always makes us unhappy but the first point that epicurus has told does not make sense..one who fears God would only lead a good life and one who does not fear would lead his life to somewhere else, but anyway it was great hearing these beutiful advises..happy mylotting..

To me ,happiness lies in the simple life. I can enjoy the ordinary life without fearing short of money and reaching what I want. I can be compained by the ones I love and sharing all the emotions. When I encounter, I will not fear as I know someone will be on my side. Strive hard and gain what I want is the way I obtain happiness.

I think that doing what you love, and being around the people that you like, and living a simple life is the happiest life, not by being a millionaire and having millions to burn. Money can never buy happiness.

do you think it's easy to say but it's really hard to do that?... maybe at first by trying to live in it like you always mean it.does t need a mental practice or preparation?...i mean not by studying but a motivation to start.
