Actually my sister is planning to get a new dog, but she is not sure what breed or what size of dog that she should get. She lives in a new york apartment, which is not very big, so I would assume that she needs a toy dog or a small dog? However, I have no clue what to get, I need some help, but i dont want to go petsmart or those pet shops, their sales people are usually not very helpful, and prvide mislead info. Thanks

I'd recommend pug, pomeranian, shih tsu, or maybe Japanese spitz? I think medium dogs are fine though. I'd prefer a Japanese spitz if I were in a small apartment. In my case, I would want a medium to big dog if I were alone in the apartment. But for you, I think Japanese spitz or shih-tsu will do. :)

I looked up Japanese spitz, and they look very cute, nice, especially their head, I like it white the most. Thanks

If you're concerned about the mood of the dog.. Well about the Japanese spitz, my neighbor leaves her dog in their garage. I never saw her take her up her house. The garage is an open area anyway. I pity the dog because she's only tied to the gate by a leash. She's doing fine anyway always alone like that but I pity the dog. The dog's very welcoming to people. She's really hyperactive and affectionate. She's healthy and I think she's a good guard besides playmate because when she's like a security alarm. The barking is annoying for me because my dog is quiet but it makes the spitz a better guard because my dog is too friendly to strangers. Yikes. My dog can get dog-napped.

Is she going to cuddle a lot with the dog or is she gonna leave it by itself? If she is going to cuddle a lot with it she shoudn't get a terrier, if she want a terrier she could get a Yorkshire terrier, cuz those dogs are easy to take care of.

She usually works everyday from monday to friday, but she goes back to her apartment at around 6, which ia kinda late to take a dog for a walk at night. But in the summer, the sun is definitely still out at 6pm. So I think she probably can't take her dog for a walk everyday, but she could definitely do it on every weekend. I am also worry about the dog's mood because she needs to work everyday and come home kind of late. Thanks for your reply

Then she should not get a terrier. Maybe a king-poodle, they are great dogs.

First of all don't go to petsmar or any pet shop. Find a reputable breeder. YOu will end up with heartbreaks if you buy from petfarms. Do not support them. It is better to find a suitable reputable breeder who provide you with help and support about his breed. Regarding the breed I would go for a small breed since your sister lives in an apartment. It depends whether she has time for grooming or not. Whether she wants a smooth coated or not. I would vouch for a shetland sheepdog.

to be honest there are really two breeds of dog that i would recommend for an apartment. A pug or a pomeranian. They are very small and make great companions also they can't go for to long of a walk since they are very small a little exercise goes a long way. Good luck with what ever you choose

Thanks. Are they similar size? What make them different?
