US state quarters P&D

On the back of US state quarters there is a tiny letter of P or D, can you explain what it is? i heard that P is not as common as D. because i am collecting them now and there is two coin hole for one state is that for one P and D? thanks for answering in advance!

The P & D tells what mint struck the coins. P = Philadelphia, PA. and the D = Denver, Colorado. Art

that's the mint they came from. P for Philadelphia D for Denver some coins have an "S" that's for San Francisco.
