After my dog has puppies

After my girl has her puppies, when they are gone will she turn into a bad dog? Some people say it ruins a dog when you let them breed. What can you tell me about this. Was your dog ruined? How bad did she look after?

How old is your dog? How many litters has she had? How old are the puppies when you either sell them or give them away? What do you mean by she is a bad dog? I used to train, show and raise dogs. I suppose a couple were described as depressed after the puppie were gone but I gave those more attention than the ones that did not have a problem. I spent more time with them both training and playing without as many reprimands as usual. Spending more time with them seemed to do the trick. Sarafina50

My dog is a year and a half old. This is her 3rd heat. She is maybe only 4 or 5 days pregnant right now. We wont be giving puppies away until they are 8 weeks old. I'm just so worried that she might turn into a mean dog or just go wild after? People have told me that but with this discussion people have seemed to change my mind. I would consider a abortion, and spay at the same time, but I feel she will ok, just worried about the after effects. Because it would not be worth it to loose her if it means she will freak out and have to worrie about the children and what her attitude might be. I'm just a stress case with this because I would never want to have to give her away or put her to sleep if she were to change. Shes a very very good dog, listens well, excellent with the kids and other people and the other dogs we have. For me that would be like loosing a child.

I have never heard anything like that. I have had more than one dog have puppies in my home. They seem the same after having the puppies. Their bodies recover in time as well. Its just like a human. We don't loose the baby fat the first day but give a dog time to heal and she will be in shape and acting normal.

That is so good to know. I am so worried her nice fit body will be gone for ever and just look like a fat old dog. But I think she is young enough that she will run it off, and we will get her back to being fit and smaller :)

I do not think that a dog would turn into a bad dog after having puppies. I had a dog that had puppies and I think that to some degree that she was happy when they were gone...LOL. My aunt bred dogs for a living and never had a problem after the puppies left. Good luck.

My dog has had a few litters of pups now and she is a wonderful dog. Her personality is still gentle. She wouldn't hurt a fly. Having pupies hasn't changed her that much. She has always been the same happy, contented, affection dog as she was before she had pups. She is expecting again now and due to have her pups soon. She is a really good mum. She is always prim and proper when she has pups. She looks so proud and looks at me as if to say, i done good didn't i. I couldn't have asked for a better personality in a dog. Although, she is the best, i do have to add that some dogs do change after having pups. Some dogs improve, and others do react a bit. There personality can change. Some do become more aggressive. All dogs are different however. I don't think that your dog will be ruined. She will always be good with you. If you have a good relationship with her now, i can't see that changing. Dogs are very loyal to their owners. I suggest you don't worry and enjoy the experience with her. It is a wonderful thing. Share the experience with her. Try to be there when the pups are born. Give her lots of love and attention. She will really love the reassureance and you will never regret it.

It ruins a dog if she is breed to early. She will be the same dog.. maybe a little more protective.. or a little more caring .. it usually depends on the dog before she had puppies and how she was when she was pregnant..

Hi Keely, I dont think your dog will turn bad, thats just one of those old wives tales. You ought to talk to your vet though because he will set your mind at rest. Hope that helps. :-))

I have never heard that before. My aunt had a female rotty and she was still as loving as she was before she had puppies.

Gee, that's a new one on me!!! I have two mini dachshunds right now that have had puppies... and they are both the sweetest dogs you would ever meet. I also have had other dogs that have had puppies and there hasn't been any change in their personalities. The appearance of the dog is not "ruined". Yes their nipples are enlarged from nursing, but otherwise the spread from having the puppies in their womb goes back in place. If your worried about the appearance of the dog after puppies, then have the dog spayed before she has a chance to become pregnant.

I have never heard that before. we have chows, and we show them at dog shows as well. and w have never had any bad dog experiences. and w have several of them and they all have had puppies, we have kids as well and never had any problems at all,we have had them all sold due to people wanting show dogs. we have had them as puppies and let the kids be around them while they were little and as soon as we have puppies, I let my kids get around them and this way they know it's ok for the kids to be there and so far no problems and we have had our furry babies over 15 yrs and have great luck. so never heard this before. they tend to look somewhat funny looking afterward, they tend to look skinny and lose their hair to an extent. but it will grow back. ours look bad as well but they just had puppies. so it will look better. Maybe you should get her spayed after these pups.
