I find the electricity home supply in some countries is 110 volt like in U.S.
In some other countries like India, the supply is 230 volt.
Why there is two type of supplies in the world ?
What are the merits and demerits of both the supplies?
Can some one explain ?
Happy mylotting.

You can use 230 volt a little cheaper than you can 120. 230 is safer in one way. If you connect with 230 just the right way it will knock you loose from it without killing you. 120 won't and just keeps shocking you. A lot has to do with how you connect with it. If you think a wire might be hot and you have to touch it then use the back of your hand. If you use the palm of your hand your fingers will grip the wire and you can't get loose from it. Also a shock in your left hand is much more likely to be deadly than in your right hand. In the left hand the current will travel through your heart a lot more than it does in the right hand. The best thing to do if you don't know anything about it is just leave it alone. If you need something done then get someone that does know about it.

I am from Romania and here, the electrical supply is 220 volt. I don't think it has much to do with effectiveness, I think it was just a choice at one moment.
The 110 volt supply is safer, because it can do less damage in case of accident and the people who get electrocuted at a lower voltage have less to suffer. I've been electrocuted by accident by a 220 V cable, and it's not pleasant at all
