We are having black eyed peas, hoppin' john, collard greens, and corn bread. I can barely remember what each element is supposed to represent.
I know that the collards represent wealth-sure could use that in 2009
the black eyed peas happiness and good fortune-I'll take some of that too
Of course the black eyed peas are in the hoppin' john I don't know why I listed it seperate.
Do you have this type of meal? Or do you do something else?

Shoot! I didn't even think about it this year! Shame on me! LOL
Okay, traditionally in my family my mother would make pork roast or spare ribs, sauerkraut and potatoes roasted in the oven together. I didn't do that during the times I was married because my husband would not eat the pork. But the past few years I have remembered and tried to have it. It doesn't look like it will happen this year though. I just went to the store today and am not going back before New Year's Day just to get the ingredients. This is supposed to be some kind of German good luck meal to have on New Year's Day.
As I was growing up we also got in the habit of having Spaghetti on New Year's Eve...until I was a teenager, and then my friends and cousins would come over and we would make home made pizza and play cards all evening until after midnight. As for the Spaghetti, we are not Italian...we just like it as one of our favorite foods. Those days are long gone now and are just happy memories.

Our traditional meal is on New Years Eve. We cook a one pot dinner of cabbage, potatoes and polish sausage and that meal is eaten at midnight. A day or two before, I cook a ham and we just have sandwiches on New Years Day.
