Do You Eat With Your Mouth Open?

Canada
December 29, 2008 10:22pm CST
Or is it closed? If it is open does stuff fall out after you put it in? Do you wear more than you consume? Do you wear a bib? Do you talk while you are eating and food flies out of your mouth? Does your drink come out your nose? Inquiring minds want to know! Also, I just thought I would try and follow a couple of my friends on here to see if I could do as well as they have A Certain Bear and a Certain Girl That is! Awaiting your thoughtful responses.... ~Heavens~

LOL! I always expect Transdisc to start such a discussion, but you Heavens? For shame! LOL To answer your question, I normally eat with my mouth open. After all, how am I supposed to get the food in my mouth if it is closed? Though I will close my mouth to chew the food that I am eating. I usually don't put more in my mouth than I can handle, though there was one time that I bit off a bigger piece of food then I had meant to. I had made the mistake of wearing my retainer the day this happened and I ended up literally chocking down my food as I couldn't chew it properly and it had gone to the back of my mouth before I could stop it. I remember feeling like I was underwater and I was so relieved when this piece of food finally slid down my throat. I stopped wearing my retainer soon after that incident.

Hi sacmom! I'm actually quite proud of myself for pulling this one off! I'm tired of only getting five or six responses...Sissy girl actually started this nonsense and so I thought I would give it a go too! It has been fun and successful...Nearly thirty responses now...this is an amazing feat for me! Thanks for sharing your story, that would most definitely be scary and something you would not want to repeat for sure! Hope you had a wonderful Christmas! ~Heavens~

Around here you learn to eat with your mouth shut or hubby will snap. I do often have to pick food from my shirt, not because I put too much in my mouth either because I am a fairly slow eater but I tend to be messy. Oh well my shoes are clean lol.

good table manners suggest that everyone should keep their mouth closed while eating and i do the same.but i only close my mouth when i chew the food, so that the sound of chewing the food doesn't irritate anyone.but you have to keep your mouth open to take the food inside your mouth.LOL...........

Ok, this is going to be a fun one. It is very gross when someone chews with their mouth open. It makes me sck to see them chew their food. I was taught to chew with your mouth closed and so I always do. No I do not talk until I have swollowed the food. No my drink does not come out my nose, well maybe once when I was very young and someone told a joke just as I got a drink and I did blow it out my nose. Mind you I was quite young. I do not wear a bib, except when eating Lobster at a very nice restaurant. Well, that wasn't so bad.

Thanks so much morningstar for your thoughtful response..Just as requested! I appreciate you stopping by as I have missed seeing you around! I do hope that you had a wonderful Christmas I'm very much like you...I most definitely eat with my mouth closed and so have no need for a bib! I wonder how many people share our thought on this? I must add here that there was one time when I was in a restaurant and had drank out of my straw and then stopped and the drink kept on coming out of the straw...as if it were possessed!!! I have no idea how this happened but lets just say I too was wet! I must say, if it is possible then it will happen to me! ~Heavens~

I eat with my mouth closed as I just hate that chomping sound. My dad does it all the time and since childhood, its been a major irritant with me at the dinner table. Well the food of course does not fly from my mouth neither does the drink flow out thru the nose, that is not yet…dunno what will happen at old age, though.

Now there's an honest response! Chomping reminds me of Gum and smacking that is so annoying but I have never experienced anyone doing this with food! ~Heavens~

closed for sure, so stuffs don't fall out after I put them in drinks don't come out my nose LOL if I'm in a hurry though it might spill instead and then I have to change clothes sometimes I talk when I'm eating at home with hubby but outside I behave food doesn't fly out if you talk unless your mouth is really full or you are too excited, at least that's what happens to me

Hi heavens, As you can see, I'm back! First of all, congrats to you on the success of your topic here. I'm not sure 'how' Sissygrl started this, but perhaps you can enlighten me later. Actually, I can use some cheering up, so I guess this is the right place to be. I eat with my mouth closed, as I was taught to do, after the food is inserted of course. Once in awhile though, if I happen to be engaged in an animated discussion, or something or someone makes me laugh, a few stray particles of food have fallen out. I do try not to talk a lot while chewing though. I can be very sloppy at times too, and have dropped food on myself quite often. I seem to have improved in this area of late, however. I hope you have a wonderful day, by the way. Big Hugs!

Thanks for getting back to me here. I'm still not back in 'full myLotting mode' yet, as it's been a really tough week for 'us' as you know. I'm here by myself most of the time, which you also know, and it's so difficult to be home without 'her.' Congrats on this and your hamburger topics. I 'will' take a look at the other one. Hugs.

I eat with my mouth closed and if I have to absolutely talk with food in my mouth, I cover my mouth with a napkin..So I guess I am a neat eater and something I taught myself, because my mom sure didn't teach it to me. I do teach my kids proper table manners, but they only get it after they have grown up..Like my 6 y/o still will talk with his mouth full, but my other children do not..

My parents taught me good table manners when I was younger and I've seen to keep the habit and also pass it onto my son when he's eating so I do close my mouth when I'm eating. One of my long time friends has a son and he doesn't close his mouth when he eats and food is constantly flying out and falling all over the place. At first when I noticed this smacking during meals when she would bring him over I told her that she should fix this problem. Last year she found out from a doctor that he has breathing problems and the way his teeth are grown in is why he can't chew right. He has to breath through his mouth. Have a nice day

Well it's a good question. I think it is bad manners eating with your mouth open, to talking with your mouth full of food. So I don't like to talk during a meal. But sometims when I eat with other people and if they are talking with each other , I have to make a voice in order to avoid silence.

This is why I love eating alone. I can do whatever I want and enjoy my food. But....when I am in public or when others are around, I do try to be mannerly and polite, chew with my mouth closed, etc. There are few other people in this world that enjoy seeing another person's food in their mouth, and running out of their mouth and such as that. It can make other people sick to their stomach to be in the presence of such. So I certainly am aware of how I eat in the presence of others to keep from offending them.

I chew with my mouth closed, I can stand people who chew with their mouths open as a habit, I am fine with it as a little joke or something, but I really do not like seeing somebody's food as they chew it. I also really do not enjoy the sound of smacking lips, its awful. I talk a little bit, only if I can keep the food in my mouth and make sounds that actually sound like words. If never had any food or drink come out of my nose.

Here is somewhat a taboo if you eat with your mouth open. Somewhat considered a bad manner. So of course, I eat with my mouth close as I chew the food. Best to you!

Hello, I try to be real proper when I eat , and when I am out with friends , but sometimes they will ask me something , and it seems they dont want to wait for me to chew haha . I do wear a napkin because i seem to always spill things all over me .

I was taught to chew stuff with closed mouth. I dont't like to talk when I am eating or drinking. It is impolite. If I have to talk, I will talk after finish swallowing the food. Otherwise, it is too awkward. It's too strange to have drink come out from nose.

I would like to eat keeping mouth close, because it is not table manners to keep mouth open while eating, and talking while eating is a very bad practice because people can get chocked and it could leads to further complications, eating and talking is a bad idea. Always keep your mouth closed and chew and no talking.
