Christian Agnostic? What is this?

Let me first admit that I really confused with all these terms--agnostic theist, agnostic atheist, and so on and so forth. When I call myself an agnostic pagan, I mean: 1. I feel that God cannot be understood; of course, he might exist...but we can never know for sure. 2. I feel that there is divinity in nature. I cannot understand the rituals and symbolism associated with polytheism. When I use the term "pagan," I simply mean that I find solace simply in observing nature, that to me, observing nature is equal to getting in touch with the life energy the flows within each and every thing on earth. (I refrain from using the word "God" here) Now to add to the confusion, I have come across another term "Christian Agnostic." Who are these people? What do they believe in? What is their philosophy? Is this another Christian denomination? I will be delighted if you could help me here. Cheers and happy Mylotting

Agnostic theist, someone who feels that the arguments for a God are stronger than the arguments against one, and agnostic atheist is the opposite. I have a friend who calls herself agnostic yet believes that Jesus did exist and was the son of God, but that the Biblical teachings about him are wrong. I've never heard her use the term Christian Agnostic but I suppose that's what she is. I find that very confusing! To believe in a 'son of' you have to believe in a Father. To me the term Agnostic means you have no beliefs either way. All I believe is that if there is a God we can't begin to understand him or his reasons for giving us life! I can't believe that He is the God of the Bible or other sacred books, or that the worship of him and the acts carried out in his name, in the many various forms, is what he would even want! The three main Religions (Jew, Muslim or Christian) no matter what arguments they use against it, are believers in the same God! Would ONE God give such different commandments or a 'Loving' God tell his Children to kill each other?

I too feel that the word "Christian Agnostic" is a bit too contradictory. And you are right about the common God of the three main religions. :) I have the same unanswered queries about him. In fact, the Gnostic Christians believe this God to be an embodiment of evil. Cheers and thanks for your response!

I class myself as Agnostic as I don't believe in the Biblical God, in fact my beliefs are similar to your own, but I've never come across the term Christian Agnostic before! The only thing I can think of is that they believe it's possible that Christ did exist and that he was the 'son' of God. I have a friend who feels this way but calls herself simply agnostic. I find it confusing because to believe he was the 'son of' means you have to believe in a God. I look forward to reading the replies on this one!

Let me begin by defining all these terms, because so many don't seem to understand them. Theist - believes that a god does exist. Generally they believe their god is evident. Atheist - believes that gods don't exist (or doesn't know of Gods). Generally they believe God can't be proven to exist, and even claim sometimes that he can be proven not too. Agnostic - believes that the nature of God is unknown, and that we can't prove or disprove that gods exist. It is nearly impossible to find a true agnostic, because they usually already have a belief in the existence of God, or they don't believe in God's at all. This is why people use the terms agnostic atheist, or agnostic theist - they believe in the existence/nonexistence of God, but they also believe that they can't prove that gods are existent or nonexistent. An agnostic Christian is just a Christian who believes that they can't prove the existence of their god. They may even believe that they can't prove the existence of many, if not all, of their prophets and the miracles that go on in the bible.

Christian Agnostic? Well for a start I want nothing to do with Christianity. I believe its the biggest Scam the world has ever seen, (and the most successful) General Motors is small potatoes compared with the Vatican. The Vatican has been around for over 1500 years and (until the Child Abuse Scandals came to Light) has never had to pay a nickle to anyone for anything! An agnostic is one who believes nothing can be known about the existence of God. Apples and Oranges never come in the same box!

well I have never heard of christian agnostics, that is a new one for me, but I do know the meanings of all these words. agnostic means not knowing for sure if there is a god or not, and you are using the term correctedly as you explain yourself, now there are gnostic christians sounds the same almost the same but they are the first christians in the bible times, theist simply means a person who believes in God, from the greek word theo or god. when you put a in front of a word it negatives it amoral means no morals, etc, so atheist means no god agnostic atheist doesn't make sense to me, because it seems to me to be a contradiction, agnostic, there is a god or not god, and no god, what the heck does that mean lol. agnostic christian, not sure if there is a christ? I am only translating the terms her. monotheist = 1 god pantheist = many gods

Hi positivemindered, Like you I am confused by the term 'Christian Agnostic. I know that an agnostic is one who feels that there probably isn't a God, but doesn't rule out the possibility that there may be. My only guess would be that they are former Christians who no longer believe in Christian teachings but still believe that they may be wrong, and that the teachings could be true. Happy New Year my friend. Blessings.

If you take the view that an agnostic is undecided then I can see that it is possible to be a Christian but not be decided on the route to God. The other definition of agnostic as one who is not committed to believing in either the existence or the nonexistence of God, clearly makes being a Christian agnostic hard to countenance.

I've never heard the term Christian Agnostic before, but if I were to guess what it meant, I would think it was someone who was brought up as a Christian, but who was undecided as to whether he believed in it. Just my take on it ...
