How do I stop my dog from shedding so much?

My dog is very furry, so it doesn't really make a difference on how much hair he has. I'm just worried about how much hair he sheds. When I brush his fur everyday, big piles of fur fall from his body. My dog is a golden retriever. Does anyone know how I can stop him from shedding so much?

You might want to try changing his diet. Consult with your vet. My dog used to have that problem and I tried different things, but I think feeding him more people food than he should have been eating was a big part of the problem since I cut down on that his shedding issue seems to be much improved. It is winter here now anyway and we don't have alot of shedding problems normally this time of year.

well i think the big thing is are you shampooing him on a regular basis as well? Diet and other things can also lead to a shedding problem, Like one of the respondents above may be trimming down his fur would be a good idea you could even take him to a groomer they may be able to give you some good advise besides its always good to get your dog pampered at least once a year good luck
