A 100 Euro note extra on the electricity bill.

I have just had a shock when I opened an envelope containing the electricity bill. It usually is around 160Euors for about two months. Recently the Government introduced a 95% surcharge to cover the cost of international turmoil in the prices of fuel. I almost had a heart attack when I noticed that I am being charged a 100Euro extra. The bill came around 260 Euros. Did you notice an increase in your electricity bill?

There's always a bit of an increase during the wintertime here in Britain, because we can't help using more electricity for heat and light, but not that much! Do I understand you right, your government has slapped a 95% tax on electricity? That's insane! I don't think they'd get away with it here.

Yep you have understood me correctly. The excuse is the rise of international prices. But it has to cover the cost of the local government department inefficiency too.

Our electricity bill here is quite large too. We pay in dollars instead of euro's but I think it translates into the same affect. I had to beg and borrow to keep our lights on because my daughter let the bill get behind. Because it was a multiple bill with extra charges I did not think to much about the fact that it was quite high. When I finally got all the back charges paid I thought the bill would be manageable. I was wrong. The current bill for one month was almost 400 dollars. This is more than two thirds of my disability income. We are not using any excess of energy and had not increased our usage over the same time last year but the cost is about tripled. Oh I could get on a real rant about the power companies. We are at their mercy. They have a monopoly on the market. There is only one provider for any given area so they can keep the cost inflated and make astronomical profits. On the same note we have become dependent upon electricity. We cannot heat our homes or cook our food without their services. So what can we do about it?

Use alternative sources of energy?

There is not so much of that in my area and making the kinds of structural changes needed to implement it is quite expensive and beyond our reach. I do have an idea for an invention but I need an engineer with an open mind to help me build it. Anyway, if it worked the power companies would probably put a contract out on me.

WOW that is a huge bill even before the surchage. My bills come every 3 months and I have never paid more then $200 australian and even $200 has been only few times normaly I am way under that. There has been a price increase but that came in place on the 1 jan so it would be some time before I get the bill.

Hi Ronaldinu, That must have been a real shock, I call all bills that come in the post hate mail. 100 euros extra is a lot of money. In the last week though I have had to put £50 which is the equivelnt to about 50 euros these days into my electric meter as it has been very cold here in the UK the last few days. Lets hope this is an one off and your next bill is a lot less. Huggles. Ellie :D

Thanks ellie. Yes it was an extreme shock but we were "groomed" for it with all the talk about international price rise of fuel. However when prices go down, bills never seem to go down.

Wow. I thought our Government had all the angles covered on extorting money from the populace. But to do something so blatant would have heads rolling here I think. Is the energy company state owned? Did they make any provision for the elderly or the unwaged?
@p1kef1sh (45681)

and to answer your question. Yes, all energy prices are increasing here. Our gas bill just went up by 32% on our monthly payment. We are changing gas companies!

Agreed Trans. That's why we are changing company. But ultimately we are held to ransom by these people. We need heat and light in this chilly climate. Mostly we get if from oil or gas. The companies buy it all from the same source and in reality there isn't a huge variation in price. I would love to use a bio-energy or ground earth system. But they are still too far out of my price range.

I still didn't recieved my electricity bill, and I am sure that I will be afraid to open it for sure. Our Governmet has to do something on this issue, since we are paying too much. Well in Italy if I am not wrong the govt has decreased electricty bills and petrol, hope our government do the same. Well we are not going to start the year in a really good fincancial situation :(

It is a hefty tax that has been introduced lately. I hope that our Govt takes heed of the union's advice. too much is too much in my opinion.

Actually yes we did and so did others in my family. Don't they know that it is just making it even harder to live and pay bills especailly for those who don't get alot of work in the winter months. I think it is a crock and don't see why they have to keep charging so much. Seems they are always finding the money to bail out realestate and car factories why not America itself?

utility bills is a mystery to me seriously in times when people need to save money and have sacrificed the comfort just to be able to do it, the rates will be up so even if we do sacrifice for the sake of tight budget, we will not be able to I haven't noticed it yet but I know they will increase the rate anyway I noticed it happened to my shop phone before I had the shop at home I cancelled one of the features because I didn't use it anyway and they raised the price for another feature so I cancelled that one too and my hydro bill at the time they had a limit, so even if I didn't use it at all (well impossible but let's say I don't) I will still be charged certain fee this is very strange because we shouldn't pay for something that we don't use and the fact that everyone uses hydro and phone, they could be making a lot of money from the limit itself

[i]Hi ronaldinu, I guess everyone is experiencing this. Last month we had also an additional of $100 in our bill...It's very tough but we also need to be warm! Another disadvantage of winter! LOL!

Ive been noticing this since the last few years. The rate of the unit keeps going up and up and no matter how much we try to curtail our consumption of electircity, the bill keeps bloating. Its sad, that we cannot do without electricity and thus have to keep paying through our nose. These types of heart attacks keep occuring regularly here in India, especially if you are living in a city like Mumbai which is the costliest in India.

Yeah.. In singapore, about a few months back when oil prices was at its high, our government decide to increase our electricity bills by 30% or even more for this year.. But luckily now that oil prices had dropped, and they are considering to cover the additional increases for us.. hehe ^_^ Hopefully that will really help us, because it's the 1st time in so many years that we are faced with an increased in electricity bills..

I haven't seen one yet, but I know our electric company is planning on raising our rates, and I don't think its fair. I don't know why they have to do it...

Hi ya ronaldinu Blimey the Maltese government don't beat around the bush do they? I am not due my electricity bill until late February and I dare say I shall faint when I see it! Last bill they owed me because I pay them a set amount each month which was a nice surprise but I think it will be a different matter with the next bill!!

gosh what a new years present, that is absolutely awful that they can raise it by so much at one time, nobody gets that kind of raise on their pay cheque.

My bill is big to begin with. I usually pay an about $100 per month. I would skip the surcharge and ask for writhe off based on my salary gained per year. Enough is enough.... International turmoil? this is ridiculous...

I am not effected by your surcharge but my bill went up considerable in the last month....and I am really nervous about the next one as we had several subzero days..which keep the furnace just chugging away!

It seems like they raise our power bill 3 times a year. It's crazy. I think that should be illegal.
