I'm a huge fan of Poe and this is his bicentennial. Any other fans out there? Favorite story and/or poem? Mine are "The Imp of the Perverse," and "The Conquerer Worm."

I am more into his poems. He has a way of making the English language dance. http://quotations.about.com/cs/poemlyrics/a/The_Bells.htm is my most favorite. The Raven ("Nevermore!") must be the most popular though.

The Bells are awesome. It is so subtle what he does there, taking the reader from joy to misery without the reader really figuring it out until too late. And you're right about dancing. Language comes alive in Poe's poetry. The Raven is an excellent example of this. I know of few people (other than actors) who can recite the poem without getting sucked into the sing-songy pattern of the thing. It's maddening (which I suspect was the intent) while you are going through it. I'm surprised more people haven't chimed it. I would have thought Poe was a bigger influence on people.

That's a good one. It sort of creeps into your head and sits there. The man's protests that he is sane almost make you want to believe him, until he does what he does.
